Full Job Description

About the Opportunity

The IT Security Specialist II is responsible for supporting and enhancing the security posture of federal information systems through security assessments, authorization activities, and continuous monitoring efforts under the Risk Management Framework (RMF). This role works closely with federal stakeholders, system owners, and technical teams to identify risks, assess security controls, and ensure compliance with federal cybersecurity requirements and NIST standards in a remote and on-site work environment.

Success in this role means delivering high-quality security assessments, providing practical risk-based recommendations, and serving as a trusted cybersecurity advisor who helps strengthen the security and compliance of mission-critical systems across traditional and cloud-based environments.

What You Will Do in This Role

The IT Security Specialist II conducts comprehensive security assessments and authorization activities for federal information systems, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity requirements through risk analysis, security control evaluations, policy development, technical guidance, and collaboration across the system lifecycle.

Responsibilities include:

Review and analyze security documentation, system artifacts, and authorization package materials to assess compliance with federal cybersecurity requirements.
Evaluate system security plans, policies, procedures, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with applicable standards.
Conduct risk assessments, security control assessments, and technical testing to identify vulnerabilities and evaluate the effectiveness of security safeguards.
Assess the implementation and operational effectiveness of security controls in accordance with NIST guidance and Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements.
Provide cybersecurity subject matter expertise across network security, endpoint protection, cloud security, identity and access management, and related security domains.
Develop, maintain, and update security authorization packages, assessment reports, and supporting compliance documentation.
Create and maintain IT security policies, procedures, templates, checklists, and other governance artifacts to support assessment and compliance activities.
Partner with program managers, system owners, developers, and infrastructure teams to integrate security requirements throughout the system development lifecycle.
Support continuous monitoring activities and provide recommendations to strengthen system security posture and reduce organizational risk.
Mentor and provide guidance to junior cybersecurity professionals on assessment methodologies, security best practices, and federal compliance requirements.

What You Will Bring

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Technology, Business, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
4-8 years of IT security experience, including at least 3 years supporting federal government systems.
Knowledge of federal cybersecurity requirements, including NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF), NIST Special Publications, FIPS standards, NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, and FISMA continuous monitoring requirements.
Proficiency in applying cybersecurity principles, methodologies, security controls, assessment techniques, and industry-standard security tools.
Experience conducting security assessments, vulnerability management, penetration testing, and security monitoring in traditional and cloud environments.
Knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, methodologies, and supporting tools.
Experience using security repository and governance tools, such as Cyber Security Assessment and Management (CSAM).
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with federal clients, system owners, technical teams, and assessment personnel.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, customer-focused environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant professional certifications: CISSP, CEH, CISM, CCSP, CISA, CompTIA Security+
Additional industry certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Security – Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate)

Work authorization/security clearance requirements

Ability to obtain a security clearance.

Work Environment

This work is normally completed in a remote and on-site environment.

Physical Demands

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's and client facilities.

Travel Required

Occasional travel may be required.

Proficiency Requirement

The employee is expected to demonstrate proficiency in all essential job functions, tools, and processes related to this position within the first 90 days of employment. This includes acquiring a thorough understanding of job-specific responsibilities, systems, and workflows as outlined during onboarding and training. Failure to meet this requirement may result in additional training, reassessment, or other actions as deemed necessary by management.

Compensation Range: $110,000 - $140,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
