The Michigan Assessment Consortium (MAC) is a professional association of educators who believe quality education depends on accurate, balanced, and meaningful assessment. A nonpartisan and nonprofit organization, the MAC provides leadership and services to advance high-quality balanced assessment practices and systems.
The MAC Communications and Marketing Team, led by the Director of Communications & Marketing, accomplishes a wide variety of tasks to support the organization’s mission: To improve student learning and achievement through a system of coherent curriculum, balanced assessment, and effective instruction.
The Communications and Marketing Team’s work falls into several primary strands that are aligned with the goals of the organization and the strategic plan of the MAC Board of Directors:
- promoting educational assessment knowledge, policy, and practice
- providing professional learning,
- producing and sharing assessment tools and resources
- creating sustainability and engagement among the MAC Community
Position Summary
The MAC Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing Consultant will coordinate development and implementation of communication, marketing, and member support strategies. This position will oversee communications media development including, but not limited to:
- marketing & membership services;
- project proposals and professional learning materials developed by content specialists;
- event promotion and materials; and
- web, video, and media content.
The Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing will be expected to work in collaboration with Director of Communications and Marketing and MAC staff and contractors as well as outside subcontractors & partners. The services provided by the Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing are coordinated with and through the Director of Communications and Marketing and all program/project directors.
Responsibilities
General to MAC
- Understand and support the mission and vision of the MAC and the various projects/grants the organization is engaged with. Be sensitive to and help to maintain the relationships and partnerships MAC has and is developing. Contribute to development and implementation of selected action plans that advance MAC’s plans and priorities.
- Understand the needs and interests of the MAC community to ensure that MAC’s communications efficiently and effectively provide information that supports high-quality assessment practice and improved teaching and learning.
- Work with the Director of Communications to develop (maintain) clear and consistent brand and style guidelines and ensure adherence across all communication products.
- Work with the Director of Communications to oversee the organization’s communications calendar and plan.
- Ensure professional-level quality for all MAC public-facing content and adherence to brand style guides. This applies to all the following: website content, newsletters, correspondence, PowerPoint presentations, meeting handouts, professional learning materials, advocacy materials, video productions, marketing materials, and published performance assessments.
- Work with Director of Communications to establish and enforce protocols to ensure all MAC materials are free from error, post- or print-ready, and compliant with all ADA requirements.
- Attend project management team meetings as appropriate to develop a deep and comprehensive understanding about the goals and operations of each project/program in order to build effective communications strategies and quality document libraries for each program.
- Understand the MAC membership levels and engagement strategies and work with the Communications & Marketing staff to promote ways to boost engagement and incentivize membership.
- Assist with keeping the MAC website up-to-date and accurate, ensuring consistency of information across all MAC communications tools.
Specific Anticipated Priorities
GRANT PROJECT SUPPORT
- Coordinate and collaborate with the MAC Communications team to build and promote the MiPAC catalog of performance assessments.
- Promote the ongoing Professional Learning events offered by the MAC and its affiliate programs.
MAC GENERAL
- Meet with all program/project leaders to acquaint yourself with the goals of each program and the immediate priorities and their implications for communications.
- Work with the communications teams on the MAC website rebuild.
- Provide feedback on MAC website and professional learning materials and draw on your own perceptions to suggest possible areas for growth
Requirements
Experience and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 plus years relevant experience.
- Meaningful experience in a K-12 educational environment, such as teaching, administration, education policy, etc.
- Skill in creating powerful, compelling written communications; ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials; ability to positively support and provide feedback to others is essential.
- Strong communication and project management skills across multiple stakeholders; leadership focused, highly organized, system-minded, and process-oriented.
- Superior organizational skills, including managing multiple tasks effectively with strict attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Apps (OneDrive, SharePoint, Word, Excel, etc.)
- Familiarity with Adobe programs (Acrobat DC, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).
- Experience with MailChimp (or other email marketing software) and web content management systems such as Craft CMS or WordPress
- Experience in photography and video production is a plus.
- Familiarity with MemberClicks or other Association Management System (AMS) database a plus.
- Skilled use of digital marketing practices, including social media, a plus.
- Must have enthusiasm for our mission and a good sense of humor.
Work assignment and duration
This posting is for a permanent professional position.
- Anticipated average per week: 20 hours
- Schedule is dictated by Director of Communications and Marketing
- Work location: mostly remote with scheduled in-person meetings and events.

The Michigan Assessment Consortium offers flexible scheduling, remote work opportunities, and competitive consulting and employment rates.
- Compensation offered: $70 per hour (depending on qualifications).
- Benefits are not offered for performance contractors
- Reimbursement will be provided for project-related expenses, including mileage, conference registration, lodging and per diem, when assigned work requires conference or event attendance.
