Full Job Description

Spectrix is seeking a highly motivated Biochemistry Research Scientist to join our client's Lead Discovery & Optimization (LDO) department in Therapeutic Discovery Sciences (TDS) at Cambridge, MA. The department leverages state-of-the-art technologies, complemented by deep subject matter expertise and broad scientific knowledge, to deliver innovative and comprehensive preclinical in vitro datasets to support our drug discovery pipeline in disease areas such as oncology, immunology, cardiovascular, and neuroscience. The successful candidate will conduct biochemical and biophysical assays with the focus being on mass spectrometry assay development and execution.

Responsibilities:

Carry out plate-based biochemical assays (e.g., enzyme activity, inhibition, and mechanistic studies) and integrate orthogonal Mass Spectrometry (MS) readouts where appropriate
Execute binding assays to characterize protein-ligand interactions using state-of-the-art biophysical technologies, such as thermal shift/DSF, SPR/BLI, MST, and Spectral Shift, etc., including assay qualification and data interpretation
Assist in the development, optimization, validation, and troubleshooting of MS -based platforms and workflows to support biochemical and biophysical assays
Optimize MALDI-TOF MS sample preparation (matrix selection, spotting, desalting/cleanup) and acquisition parameters; establish QC criteria and ensure data reproducibility across runs
Maintain MS instruments to ensure smooth operations and minimize downtime
Analyze, visualize, and report assay and mass spectrometry data; document methods and results in the corporate database and communicate findings to project teams

Qualifications and Technical Skills:

B.S. degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field with 2+ years of relevant industry or academic experience
Experience with MALDI-TOF MS or other MS platforms (sample preparation, method optimization, and data interpretation)
Understanding of biochemical assay development (e.g., enzyme activity/inhibition assays, assay optimization, controls, and data quality metrics)
Familiarity with common biophysical techniques used to measure binding and stability (e.g., DSF, SPR/BLI, MST, and Spectral Shift, etc.)
Ability to work independently to generate precise, reliable data in support of discovery projects, including appropriate documentation and communication of results
