Full Job Description

Description:

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a physician/provider, provides nursing care in a clinic environment. Organizes a safe, clean setting for patients during their visits. Utilizes appropriate equipment and resources and supervises staff in the provision of clinic services and care. Provides direct and indirect patient care as needed. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs and documents laboratory tests in a clinic setting.

Performs urine dip stick for protein, glucose, bilirubin, ketones, specific gravity, blood, PH, urobilinogen nitrite and leukocytes.
Collects blood samples by finger stick using aseptic technique for HCT and capillary blood glucose.
Performs urine HCG pregnancy tests as directed.
Obtains and accurately labels specimens for laboratory tests.

Provides services and care for patients

Takes and records blood pressure readings, weight and height.
Assists physician/provider and prepares patients for various types of examinations and procedures.
As directed by physician/provider administers specific drugs or medications either orally or by injection and observes patient for reactions. Documents medication and reactions in medical record.
Instructs patients and family members regarding treatments and follow-up care.
Applies or changes dressings as requested.
Assists physician/provider with minor surgical procedures in clinic.
Performs basic life support skills in an emergency situation.
Provides care appropriate for the neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Assess and interprets data to identify patient requirements related to their age specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.

Maintains patient files

Prior to examination, obtains subjective information related to patient’s perception of health.
Collects necessary information received concerning x-ray and laboratory reports, data from referring physicians, and surgical or other procedures reports for patient medical record.

Maintains supplies and equipment

Insures that inventory of necessary supplies and equipment is maintained for diagnostic and treatment procedures.
Stocks supplies in exam rooms and assures their cleanliness.
Clean and sterilizes surgical instruments, labels the type of instrument and records the date.

Requirements:

Education – Graduate of an accredited School of Vocational Nursing
Job Related skills – Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
License, Registry or Certification –
Licensed Vocational Nurse currently licensed in the State of Texas.
Current BLS certification
Experience –
Prior Work Experience -
Two years as a licensed Vocational Nurse
One year of clinic or supervisory experience preferred.
Technical Training – Computer skills required.
Physical and Mental Requirements -
Position requires extended periods of walking and standing.
Repeated bending, stooping and reaching, lifting up to 50 pounds.
Transferring and lifting or supporting patients who may experience sudden weakness or inability to stand.
The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions and directions and to instruct employees.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS

Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potential infectious materials.
Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
Acts as liaison between patient, physician, family member, significant other and other health disciplines.
Interacts with patients, family members and Medical Staff members on a continuous basis.
Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
Follows MCHD Policies and Procedures and safety guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned by the department management staff.
Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
