Full Job Description

Qualifications:

The Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS) approved state and or national certification. Possesses a high school diploma or equivalent.

Documentation of successful completion of a training program or documentation from a previous employer.

Documentation of the successful completion, within the last year, of a skills competency checklist that includes at least the following:

Basic renal anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology
The effect of renal failure on other body systems
Basic psychological aspects of ESRD
Medications commonly administered to patients with ESRD, including side effects, toxicity signs and symptoms, and other common problems associated with medications.
Introduction to dialysis treatments and options, including a history of dialysis and definitions and terminology used.
Dialysate composition, options, indications, complications, and safety.
Safe operation of hemodialysis machines and monitoring.
Procedure and purpose of equipment disinfection.
Understanding of the current dialysis water treatment standards.
Understanding of water treatment systems and devices.
Understanding of the risk to patients of unsafe water.
Adherence to infection control procedures.
Sterile technique and specimen handling.
Risk to employees of blood and chemical exposure.
Training in accessing the circulatory system.
Understanding the creation and development of a fistula.
Needle placement for access and prevention of complications.
Identification of signs and symptoms of complications when cannulating the access.

Duties and responsibilities:

Sets up, operates, cleans, and disinfects hemodialysis machines and related equipment in accordance with policy and procedure.
Monitors equipment and patient status during dialysis treatments, documents, and communicates patient status to the nurse.
Immediately reports any significant changes in patient condition to the nurse.
Documents treatment information following policy and procedure.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Obtains and prepares specimens such as blood, urine, and water per laboratory requirements.
Participates in emergency care as needed.
Performs other duties as requested by the charge nurse or clinical manager.

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Day-to-day work includes desk and personal computer work and interaction with patients, the facility, staff, and physicians. The position provides direct patient care that regularly involves heavy lifting and moving of patients and assisting with ambulation.

Equipment aids and/or coworkers may help. This position requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing, and the employee must be able to bend over. The employee may occasionally be required to move, with assistance, machines and equipment weighing up to 200lbs., and may lift chemical water solutions of up to 30lbs., up as high as 5 feet.
