Experienced Carpenter – Flexible / As-Needed Deck Work
Pay: $25–$35 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Lake Zurich / North, West & Northwest Suburbs
Schedule: Part-time / As needed / Full workdays
Small established deck contractor is looking for an experienced carpenter for occasional project-based work.
This is not a full-time position and there is no guaranteed weekly schedule. Work will be offered as projects and workload require, in full-day increments and usually for several consecutive days.
This could be a good fit for an experienced carpenter who has other work but would like to fill openings in his schedule, a self-employed tradesman looking for supplemental work, or a semi-retired carpenter who wants to work occasionally.
What We Do
Our primary work is residential deck construction, including:
Deck framing
Composite and wood decking
Railings and stairs
Deck demolition and reconstruction
Occasional residential carpentry and remodeling
Most projects are located in Chicago's north, northwest and western suburbs.
What We're Looking For
You should have actual residential construction or carpentry experience and be comfortable working with standard carpentry tools without needing instruction in the basics.
Useful skills include:
Accurate measuring, layout and cutting
Framing with dimensional lumber
Circular saw, miter saw and reciprocating saw operation
Impact drivers, drills and other common construction tools
Understanding level, plumb and square
Deck, framing or remodeling experience
Ability to work independently once a task has been explained
Ability to safely handle typical construction materials
Deck-specific experience is preferred but not required. A competent residential carpenter or framer can learn our deck-building methods.
Reliability is important. If you agree to work a particular day, we need to be able to count on you being there.
What This Position Is Not
This is not a 40-hour-per-week position. We don't want to misrepresent intermittent work as regular employment.
We are also not looking for an inexperienced general laborer who wants to learn carpentry from scratch. Some training in our particular methods is expected, but applicants should already possess basic carpentry skills.
Compensation
Starting pay is generally $25–$35/hour, depending on demonstrated skill and experience.
Higher compensation may be appropriate for someone capable of independently handling more advanced layout, framing or other skilled carpentry operations.
Paid drive time may be provided when appropriate for projects outside our normal work area.
If you're an experienced carpenter interested in occasional work without committing to another full-time job, we'd like to hear from you.
When responding, please briefly describe your construction/carpentry experience, the type of work you're most comfortable doing, and your general availability.
