Full Job Description

The Optometric Assistant supports the optometrist in providing efficient, accurate, and patient-focused eye care. This position assists with pre-testing, patient workups, diagnostic testing, examination preparation, and maintaining accurate clinical records while ensuring patients feel comfortable and well cared for throughout their visit.

Key Responsibilities

Welcome and prepare patients for their eye examination and clinical testing.
Obtain and document accurate patient medical and ocular histories.
Perform preliminary and diagnostic testing, including visual acuity, auto-refraction, keratometry, tonometry, and other testing as directed.
Perform and document visual field testing, OCT, retinal imaging, and other diagnostic procedures as applicable.
Conduct preliminary measurements and testing prior to the optometrist's examination.
Prepare examination rooms and ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and properly maintained.
Accurately enter and update patient information, test results, and clinical notes in the electronic health record (EHR).
Educate patients on testing procedures and provide clear instructions before and during examinations.
Assist with contact lens-related testing, training, insertion/removal instruction, and patient education as directed by the optometrist.
Assist with dilation and other clinical procedures as directed and within the scope of training and applicable regulations.
Follow proper infection-control, sanitation, and patient-safety procedures.
Maintain adequate clinical supplies and notify appropriate staff when supplies need to be reordered.
Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional clinical environment.
Support the optometrist and clinical team in maintaining an efficient patient flow.
Perform other clinical duties as assigned by the optometrist or clinical supervisor.

Qualifications

Previous experience in an optometric or ophthalmic setting preferred.
Knowledge of basic ocular terminology and eye-care procedures.
Comfortable operating optometric diagnostic and pre-testing equipment.
Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.
Excellent communication and patient-care skills.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Ability to follow established clinical protocols and instructions.
Commitment to patient confidentiality, safety, and quality care.
