Special Education Teacher

Reports To:

Building Principal and Director of Special Education

Salary:

$77,000 – $87,000 annually, based on education, certification, experience, and placement on the district salary schedule.

Position Description

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, individualized instruction and educational services to students with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), and district policies. The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborates with staff and families, and creates an inclusive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, independence, and student success.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide specialized instruction to students with disabilities in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals, accommodations, modifications, and transition plans.
Serve as the case manager for assigned students, ensuring all timelines and compliance requirements are met.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the district's special education management system.
Monitor student progress using data-driven instructional practices and adjust instruction as needed.
Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and ensure appropriate implementation of accommodations and modifications.
Participate in multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET) meetings, IEP meetings, parent conferences, and other student support meetings.
Administer and interpret informal assessments and assist with formal evaluation processes.
Implement evidence-based instructional strategies and behavioral interventions designed to improve student outcomes.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, guardians, staff, and community agencies.
Coordinate services with related service providers, including school psychologists, social workers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and positive classroom environment that promotes respect and student engagement.
Utilize educational technology and assistive technology to support individualized learning.
Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), district committees, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
Support implementation of district initiatives, including Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Director of Special Education.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
Valid Michigan Special Education Endorsement appropriate to the assigned disability area.
Bachelor's degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE).
Demonstrated knowledge of differentiated instruction and evidence-based intervention strategies.
Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Special Education or related field.
Experience working in an urban public school or Public School Academy.
Experience with inclusive instructional practices and co-teaching models.
Knowledge of MTSS, PBIS, Restorative Practices, and trauma-informed instruction.
Experience using educational technology, assistive technology, and online learning platforms.
Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or comparable de-escalation training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of federal and Michigan special education laws and regulations.
Ability to develop and implement legally compliant Individualized Education Programs.
Strong instructional planning and classroom management skills.
Ability to analyze student achievement data to inform instructional decisions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong problem-solving and organizational abilities.
Ability to build collaborative relationships with families, staff, and community agencies.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning.
Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and move throughout the school day.
Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment up to 30 pounds.
Ability to assist students with mobility, personal care, or emergency situations when required.
Ability to safely implement approved crisis intervention procedures when necessary.

Work Environment

The Special Education Teacher works in classrooms, resource rooms, and other educational settings. The position requires regular interaction with students, families, administrators, teachers, and related service providers. Occasional participation in field trips, after-school meetings, and professional development activities may be required.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal and Director of Special Education in accordance with district policies, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and Michigan law.
