As part of our tax division, the Seasonal Tax Preparer plays a critical role during tax season by preparing accurate, compliant, and timely tax returns that align with our clients’ broader financial goals.
Job Summary
The Seasonal Tax Preparer is responsible for preparing and reviewing a high volume of individual, business, and trust tax returns for the tax filing season. This role demands strong technical proficiency, detailed understanding of current tax codes, and consistent accuracy under tight deadlines.
Working closely with the Tax Manager and other preparers, you will ensure each return is prepared in compliance with IRS and state regulations, utilizing the firm’s tax software systems to maintain data integrity and efficiency. Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Review
- Prepare and review federal and state individual (Form 1040), business (1120, 1120S, 1065), and trust (1041) tax returns.
- Analyze financial statements, K-1s, and supporting schedules to ensure complete and accurate reporting.
- Verify client documentation for accuracy and completeness prior to data entry.
- Apply current tax laws and identify opportunities for tax savings or compliance improvements.
- Maintain organized electronic files in accordance with firm standards and IRS recordkeeping requirements.
Quality Control & Compliance
- Ensure returns meet all IRS and state filing requirements and deadlines.
- Review prior-year returns and reconcile carryforwards and depreciation schedules where applicable.
- Research and resolve discrepancies or tax-related issues as assigned by senior staff.
- Follow firm review procedures to maintain accuracy, efficiency, and compliance metrics.
Collaboration & Workflow Management
- Coordinate with the Tax Manager and operations team to manage workload priorities and daily production targets.
- Utilize tax preparation software (e.g., Drake, UltraTax, ProConnect) and CRM tools to track client progress and filing status.
- Communicate status updates to internal teams to ensure on-time delivery and client satisfaction.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum 2+ years of experience preparing individual and/or business tax returns in a professional tax environment
- Valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)
- Demonstrated proficiency with tax preparation software (e.g., UltraTax, ProConnect, Drake, or similar)
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax codes, filing requirements, and current IRS regulations
- Experience preparing returns with multiple income sources, itemized deductions, and complex tax situations
- Proven ability to manage high-volume workloads accurately and efficiently during peak filing periods
Preferred:
- Prior experience in a financial advisory, CPA, or wealth management firm
- Active EA or CPA license (or progress toward certification)
- Experience preparing trust or partnership returns (Forms 1041, 1065)
- Familiarity with workflow management systems and document management tools
