Full Job Description

CNC Lathe Operator – Aerospace & Defense

Department: Machining / Operations
Reports to: Production Supervisor / Machine Shop Manager
Location: Mentor, Ohio
Schedule: 1st shift; Full-time
Pay range: Based on experience
FLSA: Non-exempt

Position Summary

The CNC Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up and operating CNC lathes to produce high-precision aerospace and defense components that meet tight tolerances, rigorous quality standards, and strict contractual requirements. This position requires proven experience in machining aerospace alloys, interpreting complex drawings with GD&T, and adhering to Department of Defense (DoD) compliance protocols, including ITAR and AS9100 standards.

Key Responsibilities

Setup & Operation

Set up, operate, and adjust CNC lathes (2-axis, Y-axis, sub-spindle, live tooling) to produce parts to blueprint specifications.
Load programs, establish work and tool offsets, and verify tooling/workholding setups.
Perform first-article and in-process inspections; adjust offsets to maintain aerospace-grade quality standards.
Monitor tooling, chip control, and coolant systems; ensure repeatability and efficiency across production runs.

Quality & Documentation

Interpret aerospace and defense engineering drawings with advanced GD&T requirements.
Perform and document inspections using micrometers, bore gages, height gages, comparators, and CMM (as required).
Maintain complete part traceability and ensure accurate ERP traveler documentation.
Comply with AS9100, ISO 9001, and ITAR regulations; ensure strict adherence to customer and DoD requirements.

Maintenance & Safety

Conduct daily machine maintenance (lubrication, cleaning, filter/coolant checks).
Maintain work areas per 5S standards.
Follow all safety protocols including PPE, guarding, and LOTO procedures.

Continuous Improvement

Recommend process improvements for efficiency, quality, and cost reduction.
Participate in root-cause corrective actions and continuous improvement events.

Minimum Qualifications

1–3 years of CNC lathe experience in aerospace/defense or high-precision machining.
Proficiency with blueprint reading and GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
Experience with FANUC, Haas, or equivalent controls.
Skilled in the use of precision measurement instruments.
Ability to work with a range of aerospace materials (aluminum, titanium, Inconel, stainless steels, etc.).
U.S. Person status (per ITAR) and ability to handle DoD-controlled technical data.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience setting up and proving out new aerospace and defense part programs.
Knowledge of SPC, FAIR (First Article Inspection Reports), and AS9102 requirements.
Ability to read, understand, and make minor edits to G-code.
Background in Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen practices.
NIMS certification or equivalent technical credentials.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Stand for long periods; lift up to 35 lbs frequently and 50 lbs occasionally (with assistance).
Work in a machine shop environment with moderate noise, moving equipment, and cutting fluids.
Regular use of precision hand tools and measuring equipment.
