Full Job Description

CNC Mill Operator – Aerospace & Defense

Department: Machining / Operations
Reports to: Production Supervisor
Location: Mentor, Ohio
Schedule: 1st shift; Full-time
Pay range: Based on Experience
FLSA: Non-exempt

Position Summary

The CNC Mill Operator is responsible for setting up and operating CNC milling machines to produce complex aerospace and Department of Defense (DoD) components that require tight tolerances, high-quality surface finishes, and strict compliance with AS9100 and ITAR standards. This role requires skill in machining aerospace alloys, interpreting advanced engineering drawings, and ensuring part traceability and quality documentation to defense-industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Setup & Operation

Set up and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC milling machines to produce precision parts.
Load and verify programs, establish work offsets and tool lengths, and install workholding systems (vises, fixtures, tombstones).
Conduct first-article inspections and make offset/tool adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
Perform in-process checks during production runs to ensure conformity to specifications.
Monitor tool wear, optimize cutting conditions, and maintain part consistency throughout batch production.

Quality & Documentation

Read and interpret aerospace/DoD blueprints with complex GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
Inspect parts with calipers, micrometers, bore/height gages, CMM, and surface finish testers.
Document inspection results and maintain complete part traceability in ERP/travelers.
Ensure compliance with AS9100, ISO 9001, ITAR, and DFARS requirements.
Prepare and support First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR/AS9102).

Maintenance & Safety

Conduct daily preventive maintenance (machine cleaning, lubrication, coolant checks).
Maintain a clean and organized workspace per 5S standards.
Follow all safety policies, including machine guarding, PPE use, and Lockout/Tagout procedures.

Continuous Improvement

Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, tooling life, and setup efficiency.
Participate in root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and process improvement initiatives.
Provide input on fixture design, programming feedback, and process optimization.

Minimum Qualifications

1–3 years of CNC milling experience in aerospace/defense machining or equivalent training.
Strong blueprint reading skills with advanced GD&T.
Experience with FANUC, Haas, Siemens, or equivalent CNC controls.
Ability to use precision inspection instruments and interpret results.
U.S. Person status (required for ITAR and defense work).

Preferred Qualifications

Setup experience for complex multi-axis aerospace parts.
Proficiency with CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, NX, Fusion 360) and DNC systems.
Familiarity with SPC, AS9102 FAIRs, and defense-industry quality systems.
Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement practices.
Hands-on experience machining aerospace materials such as titanium, Inconel, stainless steels, and aluminum alloys.
Industry certifications (NIMS, NTMA, or DoD-specific machining certifications).

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Stand for long periods; frequently lift up to 35 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs (with assistance).
Work in a machine shop environment with moderate noise, moving equipment, and cutting fluids.
Frequent use of precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
