Full Job Description

About House of Refuge Sunnyslope: HRS is a non-denominational Christ focused ministry who adheres to a statement of beliefs that govern the organization's practice and teaching. It is the responsibility of each employee to use their position within HRS to further God’s Kingdom and the mission of the organization by using every interaction with staff, volunteers, donors, residents, and community partners as a mechanism to share God’s love and the Gospel and educate about the organization's mission and impact.

Position Summary: The Childcare & Teaching Assistant is a fun, energetic, patient person that loves children and desires to bring their talents to a Christ focused ministry to assist the Children’s Case Manager with teaching and activities for children 0-11 year in our transitional housing program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Lead the lesson and time of worship that are provided in the class lesson plan. The lesson may include a video teaching and discussion or a craft/activity. Other volunteers may be present, but it is the Childcare Assistant’s responsibility to orchestrate the rhythm within the classroom and help their volunteers acclimate within that structure.
Maintain a safe classroom space by addressing behavior concerns and communicating them with supervisor and parents. Modeling techniques to help children re-regulate and learn to solve problems is essential.
Communicate classroom needs (i.e. supplies are running low, items get broken, trouble with technology, etc.) with the supervisor.
Close out the classroom at the end of each night by putting away supplies, throwing out extra papers (or returning to supervisor), taking out trash, vacuuming the floor, and wiping down tables/toys/high-use items.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

Ability to pass background check and drug test
Ability to work with minimal supervision
Positive and professional behavior with residents, staff, leadership, and volunteers is essential
Ability to read/write/speak English
Experience working with children, knowledge and understanding of children’s needs and safety
Available Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00 - 8:00pm
Reliable transportation
Preferred qualifications also include CPR/first aid and an understanding of trauma-informed care.

Additional Requirements:

Strong walk in Christian faith and lives a Biblical Life
Willing to acknowledge, adhere, and promote ministry’s Christian core values and Statement of Beliefs
Compassion for residents struggling with addictions, poverty, and homelessness

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.

Duties may include but are not limited to: getting up and down from the floor, jumping, lifting or carrying children, moving small furniture, and spending some time outside if the weather permits.
