Full Job Description

An established and growing construction company in Phoenix is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join its Accounting & Finance team. This position reports to the Controller and plays an important role in financial reporting, construction job costing, project accounting, financial controls, and day-to-day accounting operations.

The ideal candidate has a strong accounting foundation, hands-on experience with construction or project-based accounting, and the ability to work effectively with both accounting and operational teams.

Responsibilities

Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Assist with job cost accounting and Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules
Analyze project financial performance, including margin variances and cost-to-complete
Partner with the Controller and Project Managers to monitor budgets, change orders, and cost allocations
Assist with journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals
Ensure accurate tracking of labor, equipment, and material costs across construction projects
Maintain and reconcile project-specific general ledger accounts
Oversee invoice coding, subcontractor payments, and lien waivers
Monitor collections and aging reports and support accounts receivable efforts
Reconcile vendor accounts
Support internal and external audits and prepare required documentation
Assist with compliance related to state and federal tax requirements, insurance, and bonding
Support the optimization of construction accounting software
Help develop standard operating procedures for financial controls and reporting
Assist the Controller with accounting staff and other accounting functions as needed

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Minimum of 5 years of accounting or finance experience, including at least 1 year in construction or project-based accounting
Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction job costing
Experience with WIP reporting, AIA billing, and subcontractor management
Experience with construction accounting software
Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
Ability to work independently in a team-oriented environment
