Description

The Director of Security is responsible for the strategic leadership, administration, and daily oversight of all museum security operations. This position ensures the protection of museum visitors, staff, volunteers, facilities, collections, exhibitions, assets, and museum property while maintaining a welcoming, inclusive, and service-oriented environment. The Director develops and implements security protocols and operational procedures in accordance with museum best practices and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

The Director of Security oversees the security personnel (internal and contracted) and works closely with the Chief Operating Officer to support the museum’s operational and security objectives. This position collaborates across departments to support museum operations, and all other initiatives.

Required Degree: Bachelor’s Degree/4-Year Degree

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible security leadership experience, preferably in a museum, cultural institution, hospitality venue, university, law enforcement, military, or similarly complex public-facing environment.
Strong knowledge of security operations and incident investigation procedures.
Experience managing cameras, access control, and electronic security systems.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage sensitive situations, and communicate effectively under pressure.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and incident reporting systems.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations as needed.

Physical Demands:

Walk, bend, lift (up to 25 pounds) files, office supplies, and electronic equipment.

Finger dexterity to pick up paper and use computer keyboard.
Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
Ability to hear in normal tones including telephone and face-to-face conversation.
Ability to walk extensive distances throughout museum facilities.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
Ability to respond quickly to incidents and operational needs.

Essential Functions included, but are not limited to:

Direct and oversee all museum security operations, including security personnel, budgeting and cost tracking, access control, and surveillance systems.
Oversee contracted security management who recruit, onboard, supervise, schedule, and train supervisors, FCC, and gallery attendants.
Ensure appropriate security staffing coverage for daily museum operations, after-hours coverage, and any special events.
Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, customer service, and teamwork within the Security Department.
Develop and conduct ongoing security-related training programs for museum staff.
Address performance issues and disciplinary matters in partnership with contracted security partner.
Develop and conduct ongoing professional development initiatives.
Assure that security team work collaboratively with museum staff and external vendors to ensure building systems and security operations function properly, including escorting vendors to designated work areas as needed.
Monitor and assess security vulnerabilities and implement corrective and preventative measures to minimize risk.
Oversee the operation, maintenance, and evaluation of security systems and equipment, including camera systems, alarms, radios, access control systems, key control, credentialing, visitor screening procedures, and after-hours access protocols.
Coordinate with the Facilities Department regarding building-related security matters and life safety systems.
Collaborate with museum departments to implement security protocols that ensure the protection of permanent collections, loaned artworks, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Support the museum’s commitment to providing an inclusive, welcoming, and positive visitor experience while maintaining security standards.
Collaborate with museum departments to programming and operational needs.
Develop and implement security plans for exhibitions, VIP visits, special events, and high-profile programs.
Respond to visitor, staff, and operational concerns in a calm, professional, and solution-oriented manner.
Assure that the security team prepare detailed incident reports and maintain accurate security records and documentation.
Coordinate with Human Resources and executive leadership on sensitive staff, visitor, or operational matters as appropriate.
