Plant Operations Director

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled, proactive, and hands-on Plant Operations Director to oversee all aspects of facilities management and plant operations within our hospital. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in healthcare facilities management, industrial maintenance, electrical and mechanical systems, regulatory compliance, and team leadership. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all building systems and physical assets while supporting uninterrupted patient care and hospital operations.

The Plant Operations Director will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for maintenance services, facility infrastructure, life safety systems and facility emergency preparedness. The successful candidate will lead a high-performing team, promote a culture of safety and accountability, and ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct and oversee all plant operations, maintenance, utilities, grounds, and facility infrastructure to ensure a safe, compliant, and well-maintained environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance programs for all building systems, equipment, and physical assets.
Ensure timely response to maintenance requests and coordinate repairs involving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and other facility-related services.
Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, NFPA, life safety codes, fire safety requirements, emergency preparedness standards, and acute care facility regulations.
Lead departmental emergency response planning, disaster preparedness activities, and utility management programs.
Develop, manage, and monitor departmental operating and capital budgets, including labor, supplies, purchased services, contracts, and equipment expenditures.
Implement maintenance strategies and operational best practices that improve reliability, safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Recruit, develop, supervise, and evaluate Plant Operations personnel while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, customer service, and continuous improvement.
Oversee the administration and optimization of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), ensuring accurate work order management, preventive maintenance scheduling, and asset tracking.
Ensure all electrical systems, including high-voltage and low-voltage distribution systems, emergency power systems, generators, and life safety systems, are maintained in accordance with applicable codes and industry standards.
Oversee HVAC operations to maintain appropriate environmental conditions, infection prevention standards, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency.
Conduct routine inspections of mechanical systems, including boilers, pumps, motors, generators, compressors, chillers, and related equipment, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
Manage facility renovation, infrastructure improvement, and capital projects with a focus on safety, compliance, operational continuity, and budget performance.
Maintain accurate documentation, records, reports, permits, and regulatory compliance documentation required by governing agencies and accreditation organizations.
Collaborate with hospital leadership, department directors, contractors, and external agencies to support patient satisfaction, operational excellence, workplace safety, and organizational goals.
Serve as the primary departmental contact during regulatory surveys, inspections, emergencies, and utility interruptions.
Be available to respond to facility emergencies, disasters, utility failures, and other critical operational events outside of normal business hours.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare facilities management, plant operations, healthcare engineering, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience managing facilities operations within an acute care hospital, healthcare system, or other highly regulated environment. Experience in senior living, manufacturing, or comparable facilities will also be considered.
Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, utility, building automation, and life safety systems.
Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare regulatory requirements, including OSHA, NFPA, Joint Commission standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, AHCA requirements, and other applicable Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
Experience as an active participant during Joint Commission, AHCA, DNV, CMS, or state licensing surveys and inspections.
Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting expertise, including experience with high-voltage, low-voltage, emergency power, and life safety systems.
Working knowledge of boilers, chillers, compressors, generators, pumps, and other critical facility infrastructure.
Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and specifications.
Experience utilizing CMMS software for maintenance planning, scheduling, asset management, and reporting.
Proven project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and meet deadlines in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Fluency in both English and Spanish is required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk throughout the hospital campus and access mechanical rooms, rooftops, utility spaces, and construction areas.
Ability to climb ladders, navigate confined spaces, and inspect facility infrastructure as required.
Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and work in varying environmental conditions.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods during facility inspections and project oversight.

Work Schedule

Full-time exempt position.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
