About the Company

The company is a well-established, fast-growing specialty retailer operating 40+ coastal retail locations across the Southeast, supported by a multi-site distribution and warehousing network. The company has built a loyal customer base around a strong, recognizable in-store experience and is investing in its merchandising and operations infrastructure to support its next phase of growth. Position Overview

The company is seeking an experienced Head of Buying to lead merchandise strategy across its store network. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role responsible for building and executing a buying strategy that balances customer demand, seasonality, and margin goals across dozens of locations. The Head of Buying will oversee a team of buyers, partner closely with inventory and supply chain functions, and play a key role in shaping the company's product assortment going forward.

Key Responsibilities

Own end-to-end merchandise buying and assortment planning across all product categories and store locations.
Develop and execute seasonal buying strategies that align with sales trends, customer preferences, and financial targets.
Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules with vendors and manage key supplier relationships.
Partner with inventory and supply chain teams to ensure the right product is in the right location at the right time, minimizing overstock and stockouts.
Analyze sell-through, margin, and inventory turn data to inform buying decisions and identify opportunities.
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of category buyers, setting clear goals and building buying capability across the team.
Collaborate cross-functionally with store operations, marketing, and finance to align buying decisions with broader business priorities.
Monitor market and competitive trends to keep the assortment fresh, relevant, and differentiated.

Qualifications

5–10 years of progressive experience in retail buying or merchandising, ideally within a multi-unit or specialty retail environment.
Prior experience leading or mentoring a buying team preferred.
Strong track record of vendor negotiation and supplier relationship management.
Demonstrated ability to use sales, margin, and inventory data to drive buying decisions.
Experience coordinating with inventory planning and supply chain functions in a multi-location retail setting.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Proficiency with retail merchandising or ERP systems; experience with system transitions or upgrades is a plus.
Bachelor's degree in business, merchandising, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
