Position Summary
Responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and removing insulation on commercial and industrial mechanical systems, including piping, ductwork, equipment, tanks, and heat exchangers. This position requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications, accurately measure and cut insulation materials, and complete installations in accordance with project requirements and safety standards. The Insulator works closely with foremen, journeymen, apprentices, and other project team members to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to Contrast Mechanical’s quality standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities·
- Determine the appropriate types and quantities of insulation required, as well as installation methods, based on location, surface shape, equipment use, project specifications, and manufacturer requirements.·
- Install, remove, repair, and maintain insulation on pipes, ductwork, industrial equipment, heat exchangers, tanks, and other mechanical systems to control temperatures, conserve energy, and reduce noise.·
- Measure, cut, and fit insulation materials to required dimensions using tape measures, handsaws, knives, scissors, and other appropriate hand and power tools.·
- Fit insulation around pipes, valves, fittings, equipment, and other obstructions, ensuring proper alignment, coverage, and secure installation.·
- Install protective coverings, jacketing, vapor barriers, sealants, and other materials over insulation as required by project specifications.·
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, schedules, and other project documents to determine job requirements and installation details.·
- Inspect completed insulation work to ensure proper installation, quality, alignment, appearance, and compliance with project specifications.·
- Troubleshoot installation issues and work with foremen, project managers, and other trades to identify and implement effective field solutions.·
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, lifts, and other construction equipment necessary to perform assigned work.·
- Coordinate work activities with foremen, journeymen, apprentices, project managers, subcontractors, general contractors, and other trades to complete projects safely and efficiently.·
- Lead or assist small crews as assigned while maintaining productivity, quality, and safety standards.·
- Mentor and train apprentices by demonstrating proper installation techniques, safe work practices, proper tool use, and professional jobsite behavior.·
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and properly care for company tools, equipment, and materials.·
- Complete required documentation, including daily reports, time records, material usage, inspection records, and safety documentation as assigned.·
- Follow all company policies, jobsite requirements, OSHA, MIOSHA, and other applicable safety requirements and procedures.·
- Represent Contrast Mechanical professionally when interacting with customers, general contractors, subcontractors, inspectors, coworkers, and other project stakeholders.·
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in commercial or industrial mechanical insulation preferred.·
- Knowledge of insulation materials, installation methods, and protective coverings preferred.·
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and installation details.·
- Ability to accurately measure, cut, fit, and install insulation materials.·
- Ability to use basic hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.·
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.·
- Ability to work independently as well as effectively with a team.·
- Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned work in a timely manner.·
- Strong understanding of and commitment to workplace safety.·
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in various indoor and outdoor jobsite conditions.·
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, and carrying materials.·
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.·
- Must be willing to work overtime and travel to various jobsites as project requirements dictate.·
- Must maintain a professional attitude and work effectively with coworkers, contractors, and other trades.·
- Valid driver's license preferred.·
- Apprenticeship or formal training in mechanical insulation or a related trade is a plus.
Work Location & Schedule
- Projects located throughout Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne Counties
- Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (hours may vary by site)
- Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required
Physical Requirements
- Previous experience in commercial or industrial mechanical insulation is preferred.
- Knowledge of insulation materials, installation methods, protective coverings, jacketing, and related materials is preferred.
- Apprenticeship, trade school, or formal training in mechanical insulation or a related construction trade is a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, schedules, and installation details.
- Ability to accurately measure, cut, fit, and install insulation materials using appropriate hand and power tools.
- Ability to safely and effectively use hand tools, power tools, lifts, and other construction equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to follow instructions, prioritize tasks, and complete assigned work in a timely and efficient manner.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to workplace safety, including OSHA, MIOSHA, and jobsite safety requirements.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying indoor and outdoor jobsite conditions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing ladders, and working from elevated surfaces for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Heavier items may require team lifting or mechanical lifting devices.
- Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, and overhead movements while using hand and power tools.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, dust, noise, and other construction jobsite conditions.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are required.
- Must be willing to work overtime and travel to various jobsites as project requirements dictate.
- Must maintain a professional attitude and work effectively with coworkers, customers, contractors, inspectors, and other trades.
- Valid driver's license is preferred.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily on active commercial and industrial construction sites. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, moving equipment, welding fumes, hot work and other construction-related hazards. Compliance with all company safety policies and OSHA/MIOSHA regulations is required.
