Veterinary Assistant

Position Title: Veterinary Assistant
Reports To: Practice Manager & Veterinarians

Position Summary

The Veterinary Assistant plays an essential role in supporting veterinarians and veterinary technicians by ensuring the efficient flow of appointments, providing compassionate patient care, and maintaining a clean, organized hospital environment. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with animals, thrives in a fast-paced setting, and is committed to providing exceptional care to both patients and clients.

Essential Responsibilities Patient Care & Medical Support

Safely restrain canine and feline patients during examinations, treatments, blood collection, and procedures using Fear Free handling techniques whenever possible.
Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with blood draws, injections, diagnostic testing, and routine treatments.
Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
Obtain patient weights and assist with collecting laboratory samples as directed.
Monitor patients during appointments and report any concerns to the medical team.
Maintain accurate patient records as directed.

Pharmacy & Prescriptions

Prepare prescription refills for veterinarian review and approval.
Accurately label and package medications.
Restock pharmacy shelves and maintain organization of medications and supplies.
Monitor inventory levels and notify management when supplies need replenishing.

Hospital Operations

Clean and disinfect examination rooms between appointments.
Clean and maintain treatment areas, kennels, cages, and common hospital spaces.
Wash, sterilize, and organize medical instruments and equipment.
Restock exam rooms and treatment areas with necessary supplies.
Perform laundry, including towels, blankets, bedding, and cleaning cloths.
Assist with maintaining a clean, safe, and organized hospital environment at all times.

Client Support

Escort clients and patients to examination rooms.
Provide compassionate assistance during appointments.
Reinforce medication and discharge instructions as directed by the veterinarian or technician.
Answer basic client questions and refer medical questions to licensed staff members.

Team Support

Assist with patient flow to help appointments run efficiently.
Assist with inventory organization and stocking.
Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
Support team members with additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Previous experience in a veterinary hospital, animal shelter, kennel, daycare, or similar animal care setting preferred.
Comfortable handling dogs and cats of all sizes and temperaments.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Basic computer skills.
Willingness to learn and maintain a positive attitude.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and more with assistance.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.
Ability to safely restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments.
Ability to work around cleaning chemicals, medications, animal dander, and other common veterinary hospital conditions.
