About the Role

We are a busy endocrinology practice in Monroe seeking a detail-oriented Prior Authorization Specialist with a Medical Assistant background to join our team on a part-time basis. This dual-role position focuses primarily on managing prior authorizations and insurance-related tasks, while also providing hands-on patient care support as needed. The ideal candidate will be bilingual (English/Spanish), possess strong organizational skills, and have a genuine passion for patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

Prior Authorization & Administrative Duties:

Initiate, track, and follow up on prior authorization requests for medications, labs, imaging, and procedures with insurance carriers.
Communicate authorization status to providers, clinical staff, and patients in a timely manner.
Appeal denied authorizations by gathering and submitting required clinical documentation.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
Respond to patient and pharmacy inquiries regarding prescription coverage and authorization status.
Coordinate with pharmaceutical representatives and patient assistance programs as needed.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and office policies.

Patient Care Support (as needed):

Prepare patients for examinations by taking vital signs, recording medical histories, and assisting with patient intake.
Perform routine clinical tasks including phlebotomy/blood draw as directed by the physician.
Maintain and sterilize medical instruments and examination rooms per infection control standards.
Follow up with patients regarding test results and treatment plan instructions.
Assist front-desk and reception staff with scheduling and patient flow as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum 6 months of experience as a Medical Assistant.
Prior authorization experience in a medical or specialty practice setting.
Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish (spoken and written).
Proficient in taking vital signs.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Familiarity with insurance plans, medical terminology, and ICD/CPT coding basics.

Preferred:

Experience in Endocrinology or a related specialty (diabetes, thyroid disorders, hormone health).
Phlebotomy/blood draw experience.
Experience with EHR/EMR systems.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA) credential.
