About Us

For over 60 years, Legal Services of Eastern Michigan (LSEM) has been fighting for fairness and equal access to justice. We provide civil legal assistance to low-income and marginalized individuals across 14 mid-Michigan counties from our offices in Flint and Saginaw.

Our mission: To ensure that those who need legal help the most — and have the least access — receive it.

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented, and client-focused Intake Specialist to serve as the first point of contact for individuals seeking legal assistance from Legal Services of Eastern Michigan. In this role, you will gather information from prospective clients, assess eligibility, identify potential legal issues, and ensure that clients are connected with the appropriate attorney, advocate, or legal clinic. You will also be responsible for obtaining required documentation, managing incoming paperwork, maintaining accurate client records, and providing exceptional customer service throughout the intake process.

As a key member of our client services team, you will thrive in a fast-paced environment that requires strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills. Success in this position requires the ability to accurately enter client information into our case management system in real time, maintain confidentiality, and interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about expanding access to justice and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the communities we serve.

Key Responsibilities

Respond to prospective client inquiries by telephone, electronic communication, and in person.
Conduct intake interviews to assess client eligibility, identify legal issues, and gather required legal and demographic information.
Schedule appointments, complete intake documentation, and obtain required eligibility documentation.
Enter and maintain accurate client information and case records in the organization's case management system.
Provide legal information, referrals, and, when appropriate, legal advice under the supervision of an attorney.
Deliver courteous, professional, and trauma-informed client service while collaborating with attorneys, advocates, and support staff.
Ensure compliance with LSEM policies and funding requirements related to client intake and documentation.
Maintain professional knowledge and skills through continuing education and professional development.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and case management software.
Strong organizational, time management, and process improvement skills.
Excellent oral, written, and customer service skills.
Ability to learn and effectively use timekeeping and case management systems.
Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

A Paralegal Certification and/or prior experience in a legal setting is preferred but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience and determined in accordance with the applicable union salary scale.
