Full Job Description

Job Function:

Shelterhouse serves survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout Midland and Gladwin counties. Our work is grounded in our commitment to Serve. Heal. Empower.

The Finance Manager will oversee key financial management and accounting functions while working closely with the Executive Director, Board Treasurer, Finance Committee, and external accounting and audit professionals.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting or finance professional who enjoys working independently, values accuracy and integrity, and wants their financial expertise to directly support an important community mission.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

· Prepare and review monthly financial reports and Treasurer’s reports.

· Reconcile operating and restricted-fund bank accounts.

· Monitor cash flow and financial activity.

· Review financial information and identify issues or areas requiring attention.

· Prepare financial materials for Finance Committee and Board meetings.

· Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board Treasurer on financial matters.

· Assist with annual budget preparation and long-term financial planning.

· Coordinate and support the annual financial audit.

· Assist with state, federal, and other financial examinations.

· Support grant and other financial reporting requirements.

· Review monthly BCBS reconciliations.

· Record and reconcile bank deposits.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to Perform the Job:

· High degree of empathy and understanding of the role of advocates and maintaining professional boundaries

· High degree of knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault

· Understand and be passionate about the empowerment philosophy

· Understand the concepts of intersectionality, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered care

· Be passionate about social justice work and committed to meet each survivor’s unique needs

· Comfort in conversing with children and adults on healthy, sexually appropriate to age topics

· Excellent written skills, including the ability to research and write grants

· Willingness to humbly engage in ongoing adult learning & professional development

· Excellent computer skills

· Ability to maintain confidence and protect operations by keeping all information confidential

· Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and volunteers

· Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with the community through involvement in community organizations

Minimum Qualifications:

· Experienced in accounting or financial management.

· Highly organized and detail-oriented.

· Comfortable reviewing financial statements and identifying discrepancies or concerns.

· Able to explain financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.

· Comfortable working independently and managing deadlines.

· Experienced with QuickBooks and Excel.

· Knowledgeable about accounting principles and financial controls.

· Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.

· Interested in using their skills to support a mission-driven nonprofit organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Nonprofit accounting experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience with restricted funds, grants, budgets, audits, and Board financial reporting.

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field is preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
