Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Medical Technologist performs a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist the provider in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Medical Technologist exercises professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner. The Medical Technologist assumes responsibility and accountability for accuracy of procedures performed.

Department Summary

The Laboratory provides clinical testing in the areas of hematology, coagulation, immunohematology urinalysis, chemistry and toxicology. Primary testing clients include the Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery, various Aultman Orrville Hospital inpatient departments, in addition to serving Aultman Health System outpatients and Aultman Laboratory Services Clients. This highly automated clinical laboratory offers an extensive test menu and performs close to 350,000 tests a year.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree, including twelve-month training in an approved program for Medical Laboratory Science, with certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by an approved certifying agency or Bachelor of Science degree with MLT certification and/or necessary experience to be designated as a registry eligible MLS.

Willingness and ability to fill the CLIA role of Technical Consultant, Technical Supervisor, and General Supervisor as defined by CAP.

Prior laboratory experience is preferred but not required.

Obtain and maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) training in Basic Life Support (BLS) utilizing Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) is required.

Skills

Must be detail oriented and have excellent critical thinking skills to recognize anomalies/inconsistencies that can occur.

Ability to work under stress, work well with others and independently, communicate test results effectively to coworkers, physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel in a professional fashion.

Manual dexterity sufficient to operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, identify, and correct technical problems.

Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the expectations defined in the employee handbook, HR and departmental policies.

Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies.

Must be adaptable to changing work environment or needs.

Strong communication skills.

Maintain competence in the following testing areas:

Assists accessioning as needed to receive and process laboratory specimens.

Successfully operates instrumentation in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.

Performs testing and quality control using approved laboratory procedures and instrumentation.

Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives and department meetings as required.

Perform instrument/equipment maintenance according to department guidelines and manufacturer's specifications.

Performs blood collection by venipuncture and micro-collection techniques.

Mentor students and new employees by providing a positive experiential learning environment.

Is aware of and adheres to regulatory guidelines.

Assist Technical Specialist and Laboratory Coordinator with duties as assigned.

Cross training to all areas in the department is required.

Think critically and work efficiently in high stress situations

Communicate effectively with colleagues, nursing units, providers, and laboratory leadership.

Uses Tools and Tones for High Reliability in order to promote a culture of safety.

Accepts responsibilities and maintains an attitude conducive to a cooperative and productive work environment.

Department Responsibilities & Expectations

Working Conditions

Work eight to twelve hours a day.

Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed.

Work weekends and holidays as assigned.

Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage

Cross training in all areas in the department is required.

This unit requires 24/7 coverage.

Hazardous Exposure Category

Category I - Includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for spills or splashes of, or mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues are Category I tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.

Category II - Includes tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks. The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues by exposure or potential exposure may be required as a condition of employment. Appropriate protective measures will be readily available to every employee engaged in Category II tasks.

Category III - Includes tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and Category I tasks are not a condition of employment. The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood; body fluids or tissues (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone anywhere might encounter potential exposure to body fluids.) Persons who perform these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
