<Job Summary>
Join our dynamic ophthalmology team as an Ophthalmic Technician, where you will play a vital role in delivering exceptional eye care to our diverse patient population. This paid position is ideal for gap year students passionate about healthcare, offering hands-on experience in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will assist with patient care, perform vital assessments, and support ophthalmologists in providing top-tier services. <Responsibilities>

Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.
Perform pre-exam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, and exophthalmometry.
Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (IOL Master, Lensstar, etc).
Perform retinoscopy and refractometry. Assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office.
Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart.
Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician.
Maintain inventory and order diagnostic medications and supplies.
Clean surgical instruments in preparation for sterile processing. Inspect instruments periodically for damage, send for repair, and request a replacement, as necessary.
Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers.
If scribing: Accompany physician into exam rooms and document patient history, chief complaints, exam findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Accurately record ophthalmic exam details, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, slit lamp findings, refractions, and imaging results.
Enter orders for diagnostic tests, medications, and procedures as directed by the physician.
Prepare and update patient charts prior to appointments, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
Assist with documenting procedures such as injections, laser treatments, and minor surgeries.
Coordinate with technicians and front office staff to support efficient patient flow.

<Skills>

Strong understanding of patient care principles and excellent communication skills
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and ophthalmology fundamentals
Experience with intake procedures, vital signs measurement, and medical records management
Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms; ability to learn new software quickly
Aseptic technique proficiency to maintain a sterile environment during examinations and procedures
Basic retail sales skills for optical product consultations and frame adjustments; retail math knowledge beneficial
Ability to work efficiently at front desk operations, managing appointments and patient flow seamlessly
Previous clinic experience or medical office background highly valued; pediatrics experience a plus
Understanding of medical coding and billing processes related to ophthalmology services is advantageous
