Role Description
The Firefighter/EMT is a full-time, on-site, Union (IAFF Local 5639) position located in Richfield, WI, responsible for responding to fires, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, and hazardous conditions. Daily responsibilities include operating emergency vehicles and equipment, performing fire suppression, conducting search and rescue, and providing basic emergency medical care to individuals in need. The role also involves inspecting and maintaining apparatus, tools, and facilities to ensure readiness and safety at all times. Firefighter/EMTs participate in training drills and continuing education to maintain skills and comply with departmental standards. Additional duties include assisting with fire prevention activities, supporting public education events, documenting incident reports, and collaborating closely with team members and other public safety agencies.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated emergency response skills, including fire suppression, search and rescue, and basic life support as an EMT.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain fire apparatus, EMS vehicles, tools, and protective equipment.
- Strong situational awareness, decision-making, and problem-solving skills in high-pressure environments.
- Effective communication, teamwork, and customer service skills when interacting with the public and colleagues.
- Commitment to ongoing training, physical fitness, and adherence to safety protocols and departmental policies.
- Completion of state-approved Firefighter and EMT certification programs (or eligibility to obtain within a defined timeframe).
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record; ability to meet departmental background, medical, and fitness standards.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operational needs require.
Required Credentials
- Wisconsin Firefighter I (or higher) Certification.
- Wisconsin EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic License.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
- 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment.
- High School Diploma (or equivalent).
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical to validate fitness for duty (able to perform the essential job functions for a firefighter/EMS provider) and drug screening.
