Program Attorney Job Summary:
The Program Attorney position will be part of UMOS’s Legal Services for Victims Program. The Program Attorney will represent victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This includes assisting victims in obtaining a Domestic Violence Protective Order, with Family Law matters, and with Immigration proceedings. The Attorney will possess knowledge of substantive law, and with procedural requirements. The Attorney will be responsible for building and maintain partnerships with other legal organizations. This position will report directly to the Vice President of Social Services and will be working alongside the UMOS DOJ Partially Accredited Representative.
Program Attorney Job Responsibilities:
1. Provide trauma-informed legal counsel and representation to clients affected by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking.
2. Representing clients in court proceedings and petitions, related to custody, divorce, protective orders, restraining orders, and other legal remedies stemming from the abuse to ensure their safety and well-being.
3. Representing clients in affirmative immigration matters like U visas and VAWA petitions.
4. Conduct thorough assessments of the client’s legal needs.
5. Educate clients about their rights and legal options, empowering them to make informed decisions in their cases.
6. Conduct legal research and analysis.
7. Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and legal developments impacting victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
8. Maintain attorney-client privilege in handling clients’ information and in communication with respect to all client matters.
9. Collaborate with law enforcement, social services agencies, and other community organizations, as needed, to coordinate comprehensive support for clients.
10. Provide referrals to additional support services such as counseling, housing assistance, and financial resources.
11. Engage in community outreach and education efforts to raise awareness about legal rights and resources available to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and/or stalking.

12. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address the complex needs of clients, including with medical professionals, therapists, and advocates, if directed by the client.
13. Uphold ethical standards and professional responsibilities in all interactions with clients and others.
14. Consult directly with the Vice President of Social Services and UMOS General Counsel, as needed, on referrals or cases, and communicate any issues that arise.
15. Attend meetings, conferences, workshops and perform special projects and other related duties as assigned.
Program Attorney Job Qualifications:
Required:
1. Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
2. Active membership in the State Bar of Wisconsin and registered and authorized to appear before the US Executive Office of Immigration Review, or willing to obtain it.
3. Willingness to focus on family law.
4. Ability to travel and occasionally work irregular hours.
5. Reliable transportation: if driving their own vehicle must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain adequate auto liability insurance.
Preferred:
1. At least two years of experience in family law, with a strong preference for experience working with survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
3. Experience advocating on behalf of diverse clients, including victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, limited English speakers, racial/ethnic minority groups, etc.
4. Experience using case database software.
