We are seeking enthusiastic, conservation-minded people to commit to 11 months of service to protect Sierra Nevada natural resources and sustainable communities. During the year, SNAP members will gain skills and technical training, mentor with outstanding environmental leaders, and help to conserve some of our most treasured landscapes. SNAP AmeriCorps members are passionate and committed to the mission of the Sierra Nevada Alliance, SNAP and AmeriCorps. Organizational/Program Goals: TERC continues to be a leader in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Truckee and surrounding region for collecting scientific data on Lake Tahoe. Through our long-term monitoring programs, TERC promotes scientific understanding to inspire conservation of freshwater resources, especially Lake Tahoe, and encourages activities that promote sustainable use of this national treasure. We are committed to providing objective scientific information for restoration and sustainable use of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Our continued goals are to: 1) Promote Scientific Understanding of Lake Tahoe: Continue long term monitoring efforts and use emerging technologies to improve our understanding of Lake Tahoe and its physical, biological and chemical processes.; 2) Promote Safe Field/Lab Work: Utilizing best practices to conduct various field and lab activities in a way to maximize safety for all staff. Work with experienced researchers and chemists to learn and use best practices at the UC Davis Tahoe City Field Station and Incline Village Tahoe Environmental Research Center Lab; 3) Develop New Research Projects Using New and Emerging Technologies: TERC will work to develop new research opportunities about the aquatic environment, nearshore, and lake conditions; and 4) Ensure Data is Collected, Digitized and QA/QC’ed to the Highest Standards: Ensure that data collection will yield accurate data, that data is entered correctly and that Quality Assurance and Quality Control are conducted effectively.
Member Service Plan Overview and Outcomes: The TERC Field Team Assistant will aid in the preparation, execution and clean-up of field activities. Duties will include helping to prepare field equipment for daily monitoring activities, conducting field service for long-term monitoring efforts, participating in daily cleanup after field activities, conducting lab duties/data entry associated with long term monitoring projects, participating in trainings related to field efforts and/or safety, writing articles for the TERC newsletter regarding field activities, and aiding the Education Team in public outreach.
Things to Note:
This position is based out of Tahoe City, CA, and offers service in a stimulating, challenging environment that provides training in a diverse array of field and lab based research activities. Tahoe City is located in California on scenic Lake Tahoe and it is close to areas perfect for many outdoor recreation activities including skiing, biking, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, water activities and more. Members will receive support from multiple staff members with broad ranges of research experience and they will benefit from living in a mountain setting. Serving at the TERC will include training opportunities, extensive boat-based field research opportunities and collaborative ventures with many state and federal public and partners.
Desired Qualifications:
- Background in science (coursework or relevant experience)
- Ability to conduct lab work for extended periods of time
- Ability to conduct year-round field activities, sometimes in inclement weather
- Ability to work on boats and in aquatic environments
- Ability to lift 50lbs
- Experience working in a team environment
- Skills facilitating and/or participating in group meetings
- Ability to lay out tasks, identify resources, focus and complete tasks on time
- Strong writing skills
- Independent, highly motivated, and able to meet deadlines with limited supervision
- Passion for the natural environment
- Ability to travel throughout the region
- Physical ability to perform strenuous activities at high elevations

National Service Benefits:
- Up to 30,500 living allowance for term of service, $2,773 per month.
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of hours for the enrolled term of service.
- Combined California For All Education Award (for Full Term members only) and the Segal Education Award for a total of $10,000. (FT/1700 hr members only)

National Service Qualifications:
- Must be 18+ years of age and high school graduates or GED recipients (or minimum of 17 and working toward a high school diploma or GED); members must agree to obtain either a diploma or GED before using an education award; meeting full list of member eligibility requirements in 45 CFR §2522.200(a)
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident
- Must participate in a national criminal history background check pursuant to 45 CFR §2540.200-206
