Reports To: Director of Land Surveying / Survey Department Manager
Employment Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Typical Schedule: Monday through Friday, with early-morning start times generally between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. Hours may vary based on project needs, weather, travel, and daylight conditions.
Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief leads field surveying activities for a variety of residential, commercial, industrial, municipal, and land development projects. This position is responsible for planning and completing accurate field surveys, operating survey equipment, maintaining clear field records, and directing the work of survey technicians and other field crew members.
The Survey Crew Chief works closely with Professional Land Surveyors, civil engineers, project managers, contractors, clients, and property owners. The successful candidate will be dependable, safety-conscious, technically capable, and comfortable working independently in changing outdoor conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead a one- or two-person survey crew and coordinate daily field assignments.
- Review project information, construction plans, plats, legal descriptions, control data, and survey instructions before beginning fieldwork.
- Perform boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction staking, as-built, utility, right-of-way, easement, and subdivision surveys.
- Establish and verify horizontal and vertical survey control.
- Locate property corners, monuments, improvements, utilities, site features, and existing conditions.
- Complete construction staking for buildings, utilities, grading, curb and gutter, roadways, parking lots, and other site improvements.
- Operate robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, digital levels, and related surveying equipment.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and complete field notes, electronic data, photographs, sketches, and daily records.
- Download, upload, organize, and perform preliminary review of survey data.
- Perform field calculations and identify discrepancies or missing information before leaving the project site.
- Communicate field conditions, conflicts, access issues, safety concerns, and potential project changes to the appropriate project manager or Professional Land Surveyor.
- Direct, train, and support survey technicians and other crew members.
- Confirm that fieldwork is performed efficiently and in accordance with company procedures, project requirements, and applicable surveying standards.
- Maintain survey vehicles, equipment, tools, supplies, and assigned safety equipment.
- Follow company safety policies and use appropriate traffic control and personal protective equipment.
- Interact professionally with clients, contractors, public agencies, property owners, and members of the public.
- Travel to project locations throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area and, occasionally, other areas of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
- Perform other surveying and project-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least three years of land surveying field experience, including experience performing construction staking and topographic surveys.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a field crew and complete assignments with limited supervision.
- Experience operating robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, and digital levels.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, plats, legal descriptions, grading plans, utility plans, and civil engineering drawings.
- Working knowledge of survey control, coordinate geometry, construction staking methods, and field calculations.
- Ability to maintain accurate field records and organized electronic data.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
- Strong attention to detail, dependability, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work outdoors throughout the year in Minnesota weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical diploma in land surveying, civil engineering technology, or a related field.
- Five or more years of land surveying experience.
- Experience with Trimble survey equipment and data collection software.
- Experience completing ALTA/NSPS surveys, boundary surveys, and subdivision work.
- Current OSHA, first aid, CPR, or traffic-control training.

- Ability to recognize inconsistencies in plans, control information, staking data, and existing field conditions.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and resolve routine field issues.

- Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with office staff.
- Ability to use mobile devices, email, field software, and electronic file-management systems.

Physical Requirements
This position regularly requires the employee to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods over uneven, steep, muddy, snowy, wooded, or construction-site terrain.
- Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and maintain balance.
- Carry survey equipment, stakes, supplies, and other materials across project sites.
- Regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 70 pounds with appropriate assistance or equipment.
- Use hand tools, including hammers, shovels, digging tools, and measuring devices.
- Enter and exit survey vehicles frequently throughout the workday.
- Work near active construction equipment, roadways, traffic, excavations, water, vegetation, insects, and other outdoor hazards.
- Perform work in heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, humidity, dust, and direct sunlight.
Work Environment
Most duties are performed outdoors at construction sites, developed properties, roadways, vacant land, wooded areas, and other project locations. Some office work may be required for reviewing plans, processing field data, maintaining equipment, attending meetings, or coordinating assignments.
Work hours may vary depending on weather, travel, construction schedules, project deadlines, and seasonal workload. Occasional overtime may be required.
