Position Overview

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing direct care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities in ASU programs. This includes implementing person-centered plans, promoting independence, ensuring health and safety, supporting community integration, maintaining documentation, and upholding all State of Minnesota 245D regulations and ASU policies.

DSPs may work with multiple individuals and homes as assigned and are expected to provide support in a respectful, empowering, and person-centered manner at all times.

What You Will Do

As a DSP at ASU, you will:

Person-Centered Support

Support individuals in daily living using person-centered plans
Encourage independence, confidence, and self-determination
Protect individual rights and treat every person with dignity and respect
Tailor support to the unique strengths, needs, and preferences of each individual
Provide care in a neuro-affirming, trauma-informed environment

Community Involvement and Social Connection

Encourage community involvement and meaningful participation
Support individuals in building social networks and relationships
Provide transportation to activities, appointments, and community events
Encourage participation in recreational, social, sensory, creative, and therapeutic activities
Facilitate sensory, play, art, and other meaningful engagement opportunities

Mentoring and Role Modeling

Serve as a mentor and positive role model
Support individuals in pursuing their life goals, dreams, and personal growth
Encourage person-centered choices and promote confidence through coaching, training, and encouragement
Build trusting relationships through consistency, patience, and genuine care

Household, Personal Care, and Daily Living Support

Assist with personal care needs such as toileting, hand washing, grooming, dressing, and eating
Prepare meals based on individual needs and preferences and encourage participation when appropriate
Administer medications and monitor for side effects as trained and assigned
Assist with household responsibilities including cleanliness, organization, laundry, dishes, and trash removal
Support individuals with pet care responsibilities when applicable
Maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive home environment

Safety and Crisis Support

Implement positive behavioral supports and crisis protocols
Assist with client safety and behavior crisis management
Follow all emergency procedures and safety plans
Report unsafe conditions, incidents, health concerns, and behavioral changes promptly
Participate in emergency drills and ensure individuals are supported during emergencies

Financial and Life Skills Support

Support financial responsibility and life skills development
Help individuals with budgeting, money awareness, and responsible decision-making as appropriate
Encourage practical daily living skills that increase independence

Documentation and Compliance

Maintain accurate and timely documentation
Complete daily logs, health documentation, and required program records
Document program data, including but not limited to:
Individual plan data
Behavior plan data
Community integration logs
Assessments
Individual funds requests
Mileage logs
Maintenance request forms
Supply acquisition forms
Complete incident reports when required
Clock in and out accurately and submit leave requests appropriately
Uphold all 245D standards, agency policies, and confidentiality requirements

Communication and Teamwork

Communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, families, coordinators, officials, and community partners
Observe and report changes in behavior, mood, or health
Assist in preparation for annual Individual Planning Meetings
Collaborate with team members to ensure comprehensive and consistent support
Treat coworkers and individuals with fairness, respect, and professionalism
Represent ASU with integrity in all settings

Training and Professional Development

We provide mandatory and ongoing training to ensure you are equipped to succeed and grow professionally.

Required Training

Complete and maintain all required state-mandated training within 60 days of employment
Attend required meetings and training sessions
Complete annual training requirements

Professional Growth

Participate in ongoing development to stay current with best practices and new strategies in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities
Continue building skills in neuro-affirming support, trauma-informed care, positive support strategies, and person-centered practice

Minimum Requirements

Valid driver’s license
High School Diploma or equivalent
At least 1 year of relevant experience
Ability to drive company vehicles
Ability to lift, push, and pull 50 lbs
Willingness to work holidays and during varied/inclement weather
Must pass a background check through the Department of Justice
Willingness to rotate between homes as assigned
Preferred (Not Required): CPR / First Aid Certification (Current CPR certification is a plus, but NOT required . Previous experience as a DSP, Caregiver, or CNA (New care providers welcome)
