What You’ll Do
As a Mammography Technologist, you will report to the Director, Breast Care Center and works under the guidance of the Mammography Coordinator. Operates basic mammography equipment and uses ionizing radiation to make quality mammography radiographs. Performs medical x-rays on clients, as directed by physicians, according to established Breast Care Center (BCC) policies and procedures. Assists the Radiologist, as needed, during breast examination and breast lesion localization and biopsies. Contributes to a complete clinical history on each client. Participates in educational programs for the community.
Mammography Technologist Job Responsibilities:
- Perform screening and diagnostic mammography procedures in accordance with physician orders, MQSA standards, and established imaging protocols.
- Operate mammography and breast ultrasound equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
- Collect and review patient histories, answer questions, and provide education regarding breast imaging procedures.
- Assist radiologists during breast imaging interventions, including needle localizations, cyst aspirations, core biopsies, stereotactic biopsies, and ductograms.
- Prepare patients and procedure rooms, verify consents, conduct time-out processes, and maintain sterile technique during procedures.
- Position patients accurately and operate imaging equipment to support successful diagnostic and interventional breast procedures.
- Monitor patient condition during procedures and promptly report clinical concerns to the radiologist and care team.
- Ensure accurate specimen labeling, handling, and documentation in compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
- Maintain MQSA compliance through ongoing certification, continuing education, quality control activities, and adherence to accreditation requirements.
- Perform equipment quality assurance, routine maintenance, and safety checks to support optimal department operations.
- Manage inventory and maintain adequate supplies while ensuring a clean, organized, and patient-centered Breast Care Center environment.
- Support community outreach and educational programs to promote breast health awareness and screening services.
- Maintain accurate documentation and comply with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, patient safety standards, and continuing education requirements.
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and special projects as assigned.
What You Bring
As a Mammography Technologist, this position requires expertise in mammography, stereotactic biopsy, and ultrasound techniques, along with the ability to obtain high-quality mammograms, maintain accurate records, correct discrepancies, and select appropriate imaging techniques, paddle sizes, positioning, and beam alignment. The role demands strong analytical skills to evaluate imaging results and ensure compliance with quality assurance standards. A solid interest in scientific and technical knowledge is essential to master radiologic principles and produce high-quality images while minimizing patient exposure. The individual must possess excellent verbal communication skills to conduct community presentations and answer questions related to mammography, as well as the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions expressed in radiologic and medical terminology. Proficiency in basic computer applications, including data entry, word processing, and spreadsheets, is required, as is advanced knowledge of PACS systems for retrieving, transmitting, printing, and merging imaging cases. Equally important is the ability to create a warm, supportive environment that helps ease patient apprehension and reflects the philosophy of the Breast Care Center. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to maintain professional relationships with physicians, team members, and patients while positively representing and promoting the image of the Breast Care Center.
Required Qualifications
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through successful completion of an approved School of Radiology Technology program, with registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Maintenance of certification in Mammography and three months of on-the-job training is required.
