Position Overview:
Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes in partnership with families in need of quality, affordable housing. The Construction Foreman leads volunteer construction teams, provides excellent customer service to community volunteers, and ensures safe engagement in the construction process. This role teaches and leads volunteers of varying skill levels in various construction activities.
The Construction Foreman oversees the work of on-site volunteers and subcontractors, ensuring that construction proceeds efficiently, remains on schedule, and meets all quality and safety standards. This position is responsible for quality assurance, loss prevention, and job site safety, as well as participating in the design process, construction scheduling, budget oversight, and contract management.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety
- Follow all OSHA and Habitat safety guidelines.
- Maintain site safety through modeling best practices, educating volunteers, and monitoring the site.
- Provide a safety briefing and jobsite orientation for all volunteers.
- Ensure volunteers understand safe tool and equipment use.
- Ensure completion of volunteer liability waivers and adherence to safety policies.
- Work with the Safety and Construction Committee to manage injuries according to protocol and complete required documentation.
Volunteer Coordination
- Supervise and lead volunteer teams through daily construction activities, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
- Engage with NWVHFH Partner Families and sponsors.
- Ensure volunteer hours are accurately recorded.
- Maintain quality construction standards aligned with building codes.
- Ensure volunteers are productively engaged, valued, and connected to the mission.
- Provide clear task explanations and onsite supervision.
- Foster a positive work environment that encourages returning volunteers.
- Assist in volunteer recruitment and training efforts.
Construction Activities (in partnership with Construction Superintendent)
- Work with designers and engineers to ensure proper home designs.
- Manage permit acquisition and pre-construction documentation.
- Conduct quality control walkthroughs on all homes under construction.
- Resolve any inspection issues efficiently.
Contractor & Supplier Management (in partnership with Construction Superintendent)
- Coordinate subcontractor qualification and management.
- Prepare agreements and negotiate contracts with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Manage in-kind donations to maximize resources.
Program Planning & Execution
- Direct construction schedules in alignment with strategic plans.
- Oversee construction progress from permit application to final occupancy.
- Maintain and update construction files and inventory.
- Ensure maintenance of tools, trailers, vehicles, warehouse, and vacant lots.
- Oversee home punch-list completion and warranty issue resolution.
Operations & Finance
- Approve and coordinate material take-offs.
- Contribute to short- and long-term organizational planning and strategy.
- Perform other duties as assigned to maintain smooth operations.
Construction Site Responsibilities
- Lead daily morning meetings to discuss plans and safety protocols.
- Interpret construction drawings and gather necessary materials.
- Work alongside volunteers or independently to ensure all construction tasks are completed.
- Supervise volunteers, ensuring a culture of safety, quality, and teamwork.
- Plan volunteer activities to ensure meaningful engagement.
- Treat all stakeholders (homeowners, donors, vendors, etc.) with respect and professionalism.
- Conduct site inspections for quality control and compliance.
- Maintain and plan for material and equipment needs.
- Attend monthly safety and construction committee meetings.
- Maintain clean and safe job sites, streets, and sidewalks.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Ability to teach basic construction techniques to unskilled volunteers.
- Proficiency in reading blueprints and preparing material take-offs.
- Knowledge of construction tools and methods.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- First aid certification (or ability to complete training before starting).
- Experience as a lead carpenter or construction supervisor preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Must complete Habitat Competent Person Training within 30 days of hiring.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods and maneuver on an active construction site.
- Ability to climb ladders, bend, kneel, and work in various positions.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs.
