Vital Fuel Systems, Inc. is growing, and we are hiring an experienced Field Technician – Construction | Mechanical & Piping to join our traveling field team.
We specialize in mission-critical fuel systems supporting data centers, hospitals, and other essential facilities. Our construction teams install fuel-storage tanks, industrial piping, mechanical equipment, supports, and related systems for some of the world’s largest technology companies.
This is a hands-on construction role for someone with a strong mechanical or industrial construction foundation. The work may include pipefitting, tank setting, equipment installation, rigging, anchoring, pressure testing, basic electrical support, and assisting projects through startup and commissioning.
Ideally, you will bring approximately three to five years of experience in mechanical construction, industrial piping, pipefitting, equipment installation, welding support, millwright work, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
Previous fuel-system experience is helpful but not required. Fuel systems are a specialized area of construction, and we will train the right technician on our equipment, installation methods, testing procedures, quality standards, and project requirements.
The right candidate will be mechanically skilled, dependable, safety focused, and willing to travel while building expertise in a specialized industry.
For an employee in this position and pay range, the value of annual pay, overtime, bonuses, employer-paid benefits, retirement contributions, travel benefits, and other eligible compensation may exceed $120,000 annually. Actual compensation will vary based on experience, hours worked, travel, eligibility, and benefit participation.

What You’ll Do
- Perform hands-on mechanical and construction work on mission-critical fuel-system projects.
- Install fuel-storage tanks, industrial piping, valves, fittings, supports, and related mechanical equipment.
- Measure, cut, thread, groove, fit, and assemble aboveground and underground piping systems.
- Set, position, level, anchor, and connect tanks and other equipment.
- Install pipe supports, hangers, anchors, sleeves, penetrations, and equipment supports.
- Perform rigging and material-handling activities using approved equipment and procedures.
- Read and work from construction drawings, piping plans, details, specifications, and basic welding symbols.
- Perform or assist with pipefitting and pipe welding using SMAW, TIG, MIG, or flux-core processes based on training and experience.
- Prepare piping and equipment for welding, connection, inspection, and testing.
- Perform pressure testing, leak testing, flushing, and basic system-function testing.
- Identify installation issues and assist with troubleshooting, repairs, and practical field solutions.
- Support project work from installation through startup, commissioning, and final turnover.
- Assist with low-voltage wiring, controls installation, and electrical support when project needs require.
- Operate lifts, forklifts, rigging equipment, and other jobsite equipment after completing required training and authorization.
- Coordinate work with project managers, technicians, electricians, pipefitters, welders, subcontractors, customers, and other trades.
- Maintain tools, materials, equipment, and organized work areas.
- Document completed work, testing activities, field conditions, and basic as-built information.
- Follow all safety requirements, use required PPE, and proactively identify jobsite hazards.
- Complete assigned work safely, efficiently, and according to schedule and quality expectations.
- Participate in training and continuing education related to construction, piping, fuel systems, testing, and mission-critical facilities.
What You’ll Bring
- Ideally, three to five years of experience in mechanical construction, industrial construction, commercial piping, pipefitting, equipment installation, industrial maintenance, millwright work, welding support, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience using construction, mechanical, pipefitting, or industrial tools and equipment.
- Experience measuring, cutting, fitting, assembling, installing, or supporting piping and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and work from construction drawings, piping plans, specifications, and basic welding symbols.
- A strong mechanical foundation with the willingness to learn Vital Fuel Systems’ specialized equipment, installation methods, testing procedures, and quality standards.
- Experience with fuel systems, petroleum piping, process piping, tank installation, rigging, pipe welding, or industrial mechanical systems is helpful but not required.
- Welding experience using SMAW, TIG, MIG, or flux-core processes is preferred but not required for every candidate.
- Experience in commercial construction, industrial facilities, manufacturing, utilities, data centers, hospitals, power generation, or similar environments preferred.
- Ability to complete assigned work independently while collaborating with project leadership and other trades.
- Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
- A dependable and adaptable approach to changing project needs and field conditions.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Fluency in English, including speaking, reading, and writing.
- Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
- Ability to pass required background checks, drug screenings, and motor vehicle screenings.
- A valid REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation.
- Willingness to travel approximately 50%–95%, depending on project needs.
- Willingness to complete required safety training, certifications, and continuing education.
- Commitment to learning, maintaining technical expertise, and supporting continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree, apprenticeship completion, trade-school training, or technical certification in construction, mechanical systems, pipefitting, welding, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
- Experience with industrial or commercial pressure piping.
- Pipe-welding certifications or documented welding qualifications.
- Experience with pressure testing, leak testing, startup, or commissioning.
- Experience with rigging, equipment setting, tank installation, or industrial mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of construction materials, testing methods, and quality-control procedures.
