POSITION SUMMARY:
The Coordinator of Standardized Patients assists the Director of Standardized Patients in the recruitment, hiring, scheduling and training of standardized patients (SP) and provides support for all standardized patient-related schedules and activities for the Duquesne University Nasuti College of Osteopathic Medicine (DUQ-NCOM). This includes assistance with the Lived Experience Participant (LEP) initiative. The coordinator of Standardized Patients works collaboratively with the Simulation Center staff, DUQ-NCOM faculty and staff on the administration and implementation of standardized patient educational activities, to include event support, back-end coordination, data input and scheduling.
This position reports to the Director of Standardized Patients.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic:
Coordinate, communicate, enter and extract software data and assignment details for events involving standardized patient activities at DUQ-NCOM and across all involved parties.
Develop and implement accurate detail tracking of individual SP abilities, schedules, and payroll data for the SPs and LEPs as needed for the medical school and other curricula.
Assist in the design and modification of training protocols and implementation of events for the NCOM related to standardized patient encounters, task training, hybrid simulation and other simulation and clinical skill-related learning activities.
Assist in active learning and teaching principles and osteopathic principles and practices for medical students across all 4 years.
Assist the Simulation Director in tracking and documenting associated evaluation and assessment tools to measure student competency and track outcomes.
Assist in implementation and documentation of formative and summative objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) to measure student clinical knowledge and skills related to the NCOM’s program learning outcomes.
Assist in the training and monitoring the performance of standardized patients to actively participate in the education of medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals.
Provide feedback to the Director of SPs, and other staff to improve communication, organization, clarity of budgets, implementation and decision making in every day functions.
Complete tasks pertaining to administrative, payroll, training, scheduling, evaluation, and creative activities involving SPs to meet the educational needs of the NCOM.
Assist in the implementation and organization of interprofessional standardized patient educational encounters in collaboration with NCOM and other healthcare professional faculty.
Administrative:
Assist the Director of SPs to ensure that the NCOM meets goals for recruitment and consistent training of SPs, including a sufficient pool of SPs to meet the teaching, clinical exam, and OSCE needs. This includes recruiting and screening SP candidates, responding to inquiries, managing the SP database, coordinating, and delivering all training sessions, and providing an assessment of performance and standards of reliability in feedback to SP employees.
Analyze SP cases and determine which SPs are most suitable and available for each case.
Collaborate with MS year – specific coordinators to effectively schedule and communicate with students regarding all Sim/ SP experiences.
Maintain and update current files including standardized patient rosters, addresses, contact information, patient characteristics for education, etc.
Assist the Director of Standardized Patients in the management, and maintenance of the payroll, inventory, budget, and operational practices to meet the changing needs of the department and clinical partners.
Work within Sim Capture to set-up and create recordings of standardized patient activities.
Assist Director of SPs to ensure that the SP experiences, equipment, and spaces meet the accreditation standards of the NCOM.
Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean or his/her designee.
Service:
Participate in required NCOM staff development and training as required.
Participate in student events including but not limited to the White Coat ceremony, service day, graduation, and orientation as assigned.
Serve on College and University committees as assigned.
Research/Scholarly:
Support innovative scholarship and research related to standardized patients in collaboration with other faculty and staff.
Support grant-related opportunities to support and enhance standardized patient education at the NCOM.
Participate in simulation and standardized patient-related training, continuing education, collaborations, and other related activities to maintain competency and be aware of new ideas and opportunities for innovation.
Supervisory:
Standardized patients, Lived Experience Participants, Graduate Assistants and other student volunteers.
Completes other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
Associates Degree from an accredited educational institution or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated experience and/or training in healthcare simulation and/or standardized patients.
Must have excellent written, verbal, management, administrative, and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
Must be able to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, and students as well as build and unify teams.
Must be supportive of the mission of the NCOM and be willing to collaborate with the University and NCOM leadership to achieve the mission and vision.
Demonstrated experience in organizing data, data reports, calendars, schedules and online software to support curriculum and/or OSCEs.
Experience with standardized patient and simulation technology.
Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution preferred.
Administrative experience in a simulation environment, specifically with SP management.
Demonstrated experience in HR, SP training or medical education.
Experience with technology and organizational, educational or instructional design software and principles.
