Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, as needed
Substitute Hours: 8:00 AM–3:00 PM
Employment: Part-Time / On-Call Substitute
Pay: $25–$28 per hour, based on grade assignment
Reports To: Academy Coordinator and LCA Administration
Substitute Pay
Substitute Instructors are paid according to the classroom assignment:
- Transitional Kindergarten: $25 per hour
- Kindergarten: $25 per hour
- 1st/2nd Grade: $28 per hour
- 3rd Grade: $28 per hour
- 4th/5th Grade: $28 per hour
Substitutes may indicate the grade levels they are comfortable teaching when joining the substitute pool.
Position Overview
Legacy Christian Academy is building a Substitute Instructor Pool for TK through 5th Grade.
Substitute Instructors provide classroom coverage when a regular instructor is absent. This is an on-call position with assignments offered based on academy needs and substitute availability.
LCA is a Christian hybrid homeschool academy serving students in TK–5th grade. Students attend campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays and complete guided home learning on the remaining school days.
Because LCA is intentionally Christ-centered, all Substitute Instructors must be active followers of Jesus Christ who are able to support and model the Christian mission, values, and spiritual environment of Legacy Christian Academy.
Substitutes may be asked to serve in Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st/2nd Grade Combination, 3rd Grade, or 4th/5th Grade Combination classrooms.
Substitutes are not expected to create curriculum or develop lesson plans from scratch. The regular instructor and LCA provide the curriculum, lesson plans, schedules, and instructional materials needed for the day.
Primary ResponsibilitiesClassroom Instruction
- Provide classroom instruction using lesson plans and materials prepared by the regular instructor.
- Follow the established classroom schedule and daily routines.
- Teach or facilitate assigned lessons in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, history, and other grade-appropriate subjects.
- Explain assignments and provide students with appropriate academic assistance.
- Maintain continuity of instruction during the regular instructor's absence.
- Adapt appropriately when students need additional explanation or support.
- Communicate incomplete assignments or instructional concerns to the regular instructor or Academy Coordinator.
Christian Leadership & Spiritual Environment
- Model conduct consistent with the Christian mission and values of Legacy Christian Academy.
- Support the Christ-centered atmosphere of the classroom and academy.
- Participate appropriately in chapel, prayer, and other Christian elements of the academy day.
- Treat students, families, and staff with grace, integrity, respect, and professionalism.
- Help reinforce the biblical values and expectations established by LCA.
Student Support
- Provide patient, encouraging, and age-appropriate support to students.
- Assist students individually or in small groups when needed.
- Help students stay focused and complete assigned work.
- Encourage student participation, responsibility, and independence.
- Work effectively with students at different academic levels.
Classroom Management
- Maintain a positive, organized, and productive classroom environment.
- Follow established LCA and classroom expectations.
- Reinforce classroom routines, procedures, and behavioral expectations.
- Redirect students appropriately when necessary.
- Maintain appropriate supervision of students throughout the assignment.
- Refer significant behavioral concerns to the Academy Coordinator or administration.
Campus Responsibilities
- Arrive by 8:00 AM to check in, review lesson plans, and prepare the classroom for the day.
- Assist with student arrival and dismissal.
- Supervise students during recess and lunch as assigned.
- Assist with classroom and campus transitions.
- Participate in chapel with students.
- Assist with routine classroom setup and cleanup.
- Help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming campus environment.
- Support the Academy Coordinator and academy staff with reasonable day-of student needs.
- Remain through 3:00 PM to complete end-of-day responsibilities and provide necessary communication regarding the substitute assignment.
Communication
- Check in with the Academy Coordinator upon arrival.
- Review lesson plans, classroom procedures, schedules, and important student information before instruction begins.
- Communicate significant academic, behavioral, safety, or classroom concerns to the Academy Coordinator or administration.
- Provide the regular instructor with appropriate information regarding what was completed during the substitute assignment.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents, instructors, volunteers, and academy staff.
Substitute Pool Expectations
- Assignments are offered on an as-needed basis and are not guaranteed.
- Substitutes may accept or decline individual assignments based on availability.
- Substitutes may identify preferred grade levels.
- Substitutes may be contacted for planned or last-minute classroom coverage.
- Candidates should respond promptly when contacted regarding available assignments.
- Once an assignment is accepted, substitutes are expected to arrive on time and remain for the full 8:00 AM–3:00 PM assignment unless otherwise directed.
- Additional assignments may be offered throughout the academic year based on academy needs and substitute availability.
Qualifications
Candidates must:
- Be an active follower of Jesus Christ.
- Be able to affirm, support, and model the Christian mission and values of Legacy Christian Academy.
- Be comfortable participating in prayer, chapel, and the Christian life of the academy.
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Have college coursework or a college degree preferred.
- Have previous experience working with children preferred.
- Have classroom, tutoring, homeschool, ministry, childcare, or other educational experience preferred.
- Be comfortable teaching students within the grade levels they agree to substitute.
- Be able to follow established lesson plans and classroom procedures.
- Demonstrate competency in elementary reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Be dependable, flexible, patient, organized, and professional.
- Demonstrate appropriate classroom authority while maintaining a warm and encouraging approach with children.
- Be comfortable managing a classroom independently for the assigned day.
- Communicate effectively with academy staff.
- Successfully pass a criminal background check prior to receiving any substitute assignment.
- Complete all other LCA-required onboarding requirements prior to serving students.

Physical Requirements
Substitute Instructors should be able to:
- Stand, walk, sit, and move throughout the classroom and campus.
- Work at student level when assisting younger children.
- Participate in indoor and outdoor student supervision.
- Assist with routine classroom materials, books, supplies, tables, and chairs.
- Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Legacy Christian Academy is a Christ-centered hybrid homeschool academy serving TK–5th grade students in Downey, California.
Students attend campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays for teacher-guided academics, chapel, enrichment, community, and student activities while completing supported home learning during the remainder of the week.
We are seeking dependable, caring, and capable Christian Substitute Instructors who can step into a classroom, follow an established plan, model the character of Christ, and provide students with a positive and productive learning experience when their regular instructor is unavailable.
Pay: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
