Histology Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports To: Pathology Manager

Position: Full-Time

Department: Histopathology

Company: Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey

Summary:Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist for a (POL) physician owned laboratory by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

· Receiving, accessioning and grossing of gastroenterology specimens.

· Prepares sections of human tissue for examination.

· Operates computerized laboratory equipment to process and preserve tissue specimens for study by Pathologist.

· Orients and embeds properly corresponding to the type of tissue sample processed

· Performs routine H&E staining, special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures

· Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Any deviations from expected results will be reported to the Pathology Manager.

· Responsible for organizing all the daily cases in folders with matching requisitions for each individual Pathologist.

· Prioritizes all cases according to urgency, special requests, send-outs etc.

· Knowledge in troubleshooting histology equipment and laboratory computer system.

· Keeps accurate records including but not limited to: equipment preventative maintenance and repair, QA and QC records, temperature and equipment charts, safety procedures, training, exposure and waste management.

· Assumes responsibility for keeping work area clean, neat and organized. Completes thorough cleaning at the end of work period.

· Prepares chemicals and stains for performing tests. Uses all chemicals following safety procedures. Maintains accurate and adequate inventory of reagents and supplies. Tracks utilization and expiration dates.

· Understands and follows all laboratory accreditation standards, OSHA, EPA and CLIA standards.

· Maintains educational credits and other requirements for licensure.

· The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Experience with medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Windows, MS Word, Excel, and a basic understanding of “Laboratory Information System” (LIS) software programs such as Vital Axis (Dx) and eClinicalWorks (eCW).
Highly motivated individual looking to pursue a long-term career in histology
Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision
Familiarity with HIPAA and security compliance requirements

Education/Experience:

Associate's degree (A. A. or A.A.S) from a two-year accredited Histology school or a Bachelor’s in Science Degree (B.S.) or equivalent from an accredited institution.

Certificates and Licenses:

H.T. or H.T.L. (ASCP) recommended but not required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $40.00 per hour
