Position Summary:
This is an in-person role, based at Gathering for Women’s Day Center, in Monterey, CA, serving as a key member of the Executive team and a trusted thought partner to the Executive Director. The Deputy Director implements the day-to-day operations of the GFW campus. This includes leadership of the programs and services of GFW, the oversight of finance and administrative systems including accounting, HR, information technology, and operations of the physical infrastructure. The Deputy Director directly shapes a positive organizational culture by developing staff, ensuring programmatic excellence, and representing GFW to stakeholders. This role requires excellent discernment, tact/diplomacy, and the ability to act both independently and collaboratively to accomplish the organization’s goals. Finally, the Deputy Director regularly assists the Executive Director in strategy, planning, oversight, and problem-solving. This position is expected to be visibly present on-site.
About Gathering for Women:
Gathering for Women is a nonprofit organization that supports women experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity by providing a safe, welcoming day center and personalized services that promote stability, dignity, and self-sufficiency. Through comprehensive case management, housing navigation, health and wellness programs, and access to essential resources such as meals, showers, clothing, and community referrals, the organization helps women address both immediate needs and long-term goals. By partnering with local service providers and offering individualized support, Gathering for Women empowers women to build healthier, more secure futures and to progress on their pathway out of homelessness. On an annual basis, GFW provides nearly 25,000 meals to over 400 guests.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Leadership and People Management
- Act as second-in-command on the GFW campus, providing ongoing support to the Executive Director;
- Provide strong day to day leadership presence and guidance to staff;
- Provide leadership for GFW programs, including the food services program, housing navigation program, case management program, and clothes closet;
- Liaise with bookkeeper/consultants/staff;
- Resolve any disagreements between staff members or volunteers and resolve any employee or volunteer grievances;
- Support with hiring, onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development for staff;
- Provide leadership and expertise in developing agency-wide and department specific goals and success metrics.
Operations and Compliance
- Monitor, maintain, and improve administrative operations including human resources, facilities management, information technology, and accounting;
- Update and ensure compliance with policies and procedures within the organization;
- Coordinate with bookkeeper/consultants/staff to ensure compliance with personnel policies, laws and regulations;
- Monitor monthly/quarterly/annual progress toward achievement of objectives;
- Assist program managers and staff as needed to complete grant and funder reports in a timely and accurate manner.
Partnerships and Representation
- Represent the organization with funders, partners, and stakeholders, partner organizations, and key committees and coalitions;
- Liaise with outside contractors including IT, Legal, Communications, building contractors;
- Liaise with external stakeholders such as government agencies, community groups, nonprofit organizations, and vendors to maintain the GFW campus;
- Assist with public-facing initiatives and events.
Data and Financial Oversight
- Coordinate with consultants to ensure reports are submitted on time;
- Coordinate with consultants to ensure monthly and year-end journal entries are submitted to the ED for review;
- Liaise with consultants to ensure monthly and year-end financial statements are completed in an accurate and timely manner;
- Coordinate the annual audit/review and 990 preparation process, ensuring that all requirements are met in a timely manner; liaise with consultants, external auditors, the Executive Director and Finance Committee;
- Coordinate with state, local, and federal agencies licensing, permits, and tax payments;
- Maintain infrastructure to gather data to accurately measure program-specific outcomes, ensure data security and integrity;
- Recommend changes in policies, procedures, and/or administrative functions in order to support data collection requirements.
Other duties as they may arise.
Work Environment:
Typical work schedule is spread over the course of a Monday through Friday work week. Work schedule may vary. Occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Office environment is working with a volunteers, staff, and guests who are primarily homeless women. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
The Deputy Director will be required to stand, walk, stoop, and bend continually throughout the workday. Occasionally, you may be called on to lift up to 20 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

- Passion for mission to serve unhoused and housing insecure women.
- Demonstrated success with leading teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable interacting with homeless guests on a daily basis.
- Ability to analyze data and strategize to meet organizational objectives.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex, sometimes competing regulatory and contractual requirements.
- Excellent high-level administrative, clerical, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to independently create, revise, and implement office procedures and filing processes.
- Excellent keyboard skills and fluency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Gmail and Database Management.
- Exemplary customer service skills, and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to partner and communicate with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Excellent planning, organizational, time and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or at least five years in a management role required.
- Proficiency in managing and extracting data from databases.
- Experience working with a non-profit and/or with vulnerable populations is strongly desired.
Background and Licensing:
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license, and auto insurance.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
