The Welding Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing laboratory activities associated with the preparation, testing, examination, and documentation of welded test specimens in accordance with approved laboratory procedures, applicable codes, standards, customer requirements, and the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.
The technician shall perform assigned work accurately, safely, impartially, and in a manner that maintains specimen identification, traceability, test integrity, and the validity of laboratory results.
Responsibilities
- Receive, identify, and document incoming test specimens and associated customer documentation.
- Verify specimen identification and maintain traceability throughout all stages of testing.
- Review work orders, test requests, purchase orders, drawings, procedures, and applicable testing requirements before beginning work.
- Prepare welded test specimens for laboratory examination and testing.
- Perform cutting, sectioning, grinding, machining, polishing, and other specimen preparation activities as authorized and trained.
- Perform or assist with mechanical testing, including bend testing and tensile testing, in accordance with approved laboratory procedures.
- Perform or assist with visual examination of welded specimens as qualified and authorized.
- Assist qualified personnel with applicable NDT activities when assigned.
- Operate laboratory equipment only after receiving appropriate training and demonstrating competency.
- Record test observations, measurements, equipment identification, environmental conditions when required, and test results accurately and legibly.
- Complete laboratory worksheets, test forms, data sheets, and other controlled records.
- Ensure all test results are traceable to the correct specimen, work order, equipment, and applicable test method.
- Immediately report damaged, improperly identified, insufficient, or questionable specimens to the appropriate supervisor.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions, abnormal conditions, or suspected invalid test results.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and work areas in clean and serviceable condition.
- Perform routine equipment checks and maintenance activities as assigned.
- Verify that required equipment is within its calibration or verification period before use.
- Prevent the use of equipment identified as out of service, defective, or otherwise unsuitable.
- Follow approved laboratory procedures and current controlled documents.
- Protect customer property and confidential information.
- Follow laboratory requirements for impartiality, confidentiality, and ethical conduct.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, including proper use of PPE.
- Assist with internal audits, corrective actions, proficiency testing, and other quality-system activities when assigned.
- Maintain required training and competency records.
- Participate in competency evaluations and demonstrate continued proficiency in assigned laboratory activities.
- Perform other laboratory duties consistent with the position as assigned by management.
Skills/ ISO/IEC 17025 RESPONSIBILITIES
The Welding Laboratory Technician is responsible for understanding and following laboratory procedures applicable to assigned activities.
The Technician Shall:
- Perform testing only when trained, authorized, and determined competent for the assigned activity.
- Follow approved test methods and laboratory procedures without unauthorized deviation.
- Maintain specimen identification and traceability throughout the testing process.
- Record original observations and data at the time the work is performed.
- Make corrections to records in accordance with the laboratory's document and record-control procedures.
- Immediately notify management of conditions that may affect the validity of results.
- Ensure equipment used for testing is suitable and appropriately verified or calibrated.
- Protect confidential customer information.
- Maintain impartiality and avoid activities or relationships that could compromise laboratory objectivity.
- Participate in training, competency evaluations, and quality activities as required.
- Follow procedures for handling nonconforming work.
- Report suspected errors, discrepancies, or potential nonconforming work without delay.
