The Job
We're a heavy-industry fabrication operation — steel fabrication, machining, and finishing — growing quickly, with multiple large, multi-month projects running at any given time. Our production team builds our schedule and we are in search of a Purchasing Manager — also known in the field as a Senior Buyer or Procurement Manager — to own the entire procurement chain, end to end, and make it something production can depend on.
This is a senior individual-contributor role reporting directly into ownership, joining a small office team. You'll have real authority to select vendors, negotiate terms, and make sourcing decisions that affect whether a seven-figure project delivers on time — this isn't a PO-processing role, it's ownership of the program.
What You'll Own
● Validate the Bill of Materials for each project with dedicated fabrication leads and design specialists before production starts, so sourcing begins from an accurate list
● Own the vendor and supply chain program end to end — sourcing, qualification, negotiation, and ongoing relationship management — for both physical materials and outsourced services/subcontracted work
● Build and run a genuine competitive bid process for sourcing decisions, replacing ad hoc single-vendor purchasing
● Maintain vendor compliance records, including sales-tax exemption documentation (Colorado DR-0563 and related resale/exemption certificates) to optimize our supply chain spending
● Maintain detailed, accurate materials delivery schedules and actively expedite critical-path items before they become production blockers – keeping CFO, COO and Production Manager in the loop
● Establish and maintain a dedicated, standalone purchasing program for each large multi-month, seven-figure project — its own BOM, vendor commitments, delivery schedule and receiving documentation and identification — so materials bought for one job don't get quietly consumed by another, and every PO can be traced back to the project it belongs to
● Tag every purchase order with the correct project and project phase at the time it's created — this is the source data that makes accurate project cost accounting possible downstream
● Build in safety stock or lead-time buffers for critical, hard-to-source components so a single item running out doesn't stop production
● Own the receiving process — confirming what actually arrives against what was ordered and what the project needs
● Partner actively with sales and production, supporting quoting with real sourcing data and supporting fulfillment simultaneously across concurrent projects
● Actively problem-solve sourcing issues as they come up — this is a hands-on role, not a policy-writing one
Must-Have
● Senior-level purchasing, procurement, or supply chain experience in manufacturing or construction — comfortable managing sourcing for multi-month, seven-figure projects, not just recurring low-value POs
● Direct experience building or running a competitive bid process
● Experience managing Bills of Materials and partnering with engineering, design, or fabrication leads to validate them before procurement begins
● Disciplined about tagging every purchase order and expense with the correct project and phase at time of purchase — this role owns accurate source data, not month-end cleanup
● Vendor negotiation experience with a track record of improving price and lead time
● Comfortable owning both physical goods purchasing and services/subcontractor purchasing
● Able to work on-site in Delta, CO full-time
● Self starter familiar with emerging systems and technology, eager to work within our existing proprietary project dashboard and company-provided AI tools
Strong Plus
● Experience specifically in metal/steel fabrication or industrial manufacturing purchasing
● CPSM, CPM, or similar procurement certification
● Familiarity with QuickBooks Online or similar, enough to understand how project/phase tags flow into job-costing reports
● Experience setting up a formal receiving process or vendor compliance program from scratch
