Job Summary

The Dominican Sisters of Hope choose as their mission, in communion with all creation, to preach the Gospel through the lens of the transformative power of hope. They have adopted three core values to further express their mission: fostering the Dominican charism, care of earth, and committing to action for justice.

The primary responsibility of the Director of Finance/Treasurer is to provide strategic financial oversight, and sound fiscal stewardship for the Dominican Sisters of Hope. The Director of Finance/Treasurer works with the Congregation’s Leadership Team to align Congregational resources with the strategic initiatives set by the General Chapter and articulated by Congregational leadership.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The DSH Leadership Team holds oversight fiduciary responsibility for the assets and temporal goods of the Congregation. The Director of Finance/Treasurer advances sound financial governance, safeguards Congregational assets, maintains effective internal controls, and provides timely, accurate financial information to support responsible decision-making.

The role includes responsibility for financial planning, budgeting, accounting oversight, investment coordination, risk management, regulatory compliance, and resource planning. The Director of Finance/Treasurer helps ensure an effective and functioning system of internal controls and supports the allocation of financial, property, and human resources in service of the Congregation’s mission and Strategic Initiatives.

The Director of Finance/Treasurer works directly with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and in collaboration with the Executive Director for Health and Wellness, the Executive Director of Mission, and the Executive Director of The Center at Mariandale as well to assist Leadership with budgeting, fiscal reporting, resource planning, and financial recordkeeping.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Provide fiduciary oversite of Congregational assets and financial activities in accordance with the Constitutions, corporate bylaws, applicable laws and approved policies as designated by the Leadership Team.
Lead and monitor the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the COO, Executive Directors, department leaders, and other appropriate stakeholders to ensure alignment with mission priorities, strategic initiatives, and long-term sustainability.
Oversee financial reporting, cash flow, audits, regulatory filings, and other compliance requirements to ensure accuracy, transparency, and timely communication.
Prepare, review, and present financial reports, forecasts, and analyses to support informed decision-making by Leadership and appropriate boards or committees.
Develop and maintain key performance indicators, dashboards, forecasts, and decision-support reporting that assist Leadership in monitoring organizational sustainability, strategic initiatives, and resource utilization.
Oversee the process for analyzing and projecting the cost of member support and care, in collaboration with the Executive Director of Health and Wellness, based on current and projected demographics and the needs of the Congregation.
Analyze current and projected resources, including member support, health and wellness needs, property, insurance, benefits and operational expenses.
Oversee Congregational investments in collaboration with the Finance Advisory Board and external advisors consistent with approved investment policies and mission values.
Maintain ongoing oversight, optimization, governance, and continuous improvement of financial technology platforms, reporting systems, budgeting tools, and related applications and advise Leadership on the responsible use of Congregational resources to support sustainable and effective mission priorities.
Maintain and monitor effective internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets, reduce risk and promote ethical financial practice.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure that identified priorities are appropriately resourced and integrated into financial and resource planning, including property needs, annual budgeting, expense planning, and long-range sustainability efforts.
Review, evaluate and sign significant contracts as authorized, ensuring appropriate risk management, legal review and compliance with applicable federal and state requirements.
Coordinate Risk Management Reviews related to contracts, services, safety, insurance, property and organizational management.
Serve as Treasurer for the Board of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Inc., and provide clear financial reports, analysis, and recommendations as requested.
Handle the legal matters of the Congregation as related to finance and assigned by the Leadership Team.
Chair or participate in the Finance Advisory Board and attend other meetings as appropriate.
Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations and remain current with emergent financial systems, reporting tools, automation technologies, cybersecurity requirements, and data management practices and regulatory requirements.
Encourage ongoing training and professional development to ensure that staff remain current with evolving technologies, financial practices, and organizational needs.
Perform any other appropriate tasks assigned by the Leadership Team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
Proficiency with financial management systems, spreadsheet applications, budgeting tools, and standard office technology. Experience with Sage Intacct Software is preferred.
Significant experience in financial management, budgeting, investment oversite, audit preparation, risk management, and nonprofit governance.
Understanding of the mission and values of the Dominican Sisters of Hope.
Understanding of and sensitivity to the life of Catholic women religious.
Able to communicate complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills to foster meaningful relationships, internal and external, to the organization in support of the mission.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and responsibilities with attention to detail and accuracy.
Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality and to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Able to create, modify, and implement structures based on a systems-thinking perspective.
Experience with budgeting, audits, investments, payroll, benefits administration, and financial reporting.
Appropriate vaccine(s) as required by the CDC and /or State of New York

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is an exempt position with regularly scheduled office hours.
Hours may at times need to be adjusted to meet the demands of appointments and meetings.
Travel could be expected.
This position is eligible for remote work, as per DSH Employee Handbook Policy #1:10.
