Full Job Description

The Hospice & Palliative Clinical Educator is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that support high-quality, compassionate care for patients with serious, life-limiting illnesses. This role ensures clinical staff are competent in hospice philosophy, symptom management, end-of-life care, and communication with patients and families.

Key Responsibilities

Design and deliver education programs focused on hospice and palliative care principles, including pain and symptom management, end-of-life care, and psychosocial support.
Facilitate onboarding and orientation for new hospice and palliative care staff.
Provide ongoing training on topics such as advance care planning, grief support, ethical decision-making, and cultural sensitivity.
Ensure compliance with hospice regulations (CMS, state guidelines, accreditation standards, etc.).
Assess staff competency and identify learning needs through audits, observations, and performance evaluations.
Mentor and support interdisciplinary team members (nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains).
Promote evidence-based practices in palliative and hospice care.
Lead or support quality improvement initiatives related to patient care outcomes.
Educate staff on documentation standards specific to hospice care.
Stay current with best practices, clinical guidelines, and regulatory changes in hospice and palliative care.
Maintain accurate records of training, competencies, and continuing education.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related healthcare field (Master’s preferred).
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience, including hospice or palliative care experience.
Experience in staff education, training, or professional development.
Certification in Hospice and Palliative Nursing (CHPN) preferred but not required upon hire.

Skills & Competencies

Strong knowledge of hospice philosophy and palliative care practices
Expertise in pain and symptom management
Excellent communication, teaching, and facilitation skills
Compassionate approach to end-of-life care
Ability to support staff in emotionally challenging situations
Strong organizational and program development skills
Knowledge of regulatory requirements (CMS hospice conditions of participation)
Proficiency in learning management systems (LMS) and educational tools

Work Environment

Hospice agencies, home care settings, inpatient hospice units, or healthcare organizations
Combination of classroom, field (patient care settings), and office work
Travel required to multiple care sites or patient homes or offices

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and present for extended periods
Ability to travel between care locations
Occasional lifting of training materials or equipment
Ability to work in clinical and home environments
