Full Job Description

Position Summary

Our financial secretary maintains the financial records of the church, including the general ledger, payroll, accounts payable and contributions. The person in this position serves as the main contact with government entities, banking institutions, auditors, insurance personnel and the Illinois Prairie Presbytery. The financial secretary reports directly to the head of staff, with accountability to stewardship and finance committee, personnel committee and church treasurer.

Qualifications

Strong financial background that includes knowledge of payroll, accounting practices and taxes
Ability to maintain business integrity, confidentiality and security of all financial records
Solid work ethic with attention to detail
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
Positive attitude and the ability to work well with others and take direction
Ability to successfully prioritize and multitask
Proficiency in Excel
Effective communication skills
Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred, or comparable work experience

Responsibilities

Maintain day-to-day financial transactions and accompanying bookkeeping and recordkeeping
Process payroll; manage tax and pension payments
File 941s, process W-2s and any other applicable tax documents
Reconcile all church accounts
Collect and record gifts and contributions
Prepare year-end financial statements
Pay bills
Make requested funds transfers
Prepare for and assist during independent church audits, including annual worker's compensation audit
Assist in preparation of the annual budget
Maintain and back up Church Windows records and files and paper files
Prepare financial reports for the church session and others as requested, with the help of the stewardship and finance committee
Attend stewardship and finance committee meetings
Attend session meetings as requested by head of staff
Maintain financial transactions and accompanying financial bookkeeping for God's Gifts Preschool, including paying invoices and payroll
Any other duties and responsibilities as reasonably requested by the head of staff and/or session

Pay: $23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10.0 – 15.0 per week
