Full Job Description

SAIOP Clinical Supervisor

Required Credential: LCAS, CCS, or CSI
Program: Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) – ASAM Level 2.1
Group Schedule: Monday, Wednesday & Friday | 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
Location: Sigma Health Services, LLC – Raleigh, NC

Position Summary

Sigma Health Services is seeking a highly experienced SAIOP Clinical Supervisor to provide clinical leadership and oversight of our Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program.

Previous hands-on experience operating, supervising, or facilitating an SAIOP or comparable intensive substance use disorder treatment program is strongly preferred.

We are particularly interested in a supervisor who understands what it takes to successfully operate an SAIOP program—not simply someone who meets the minimum credentialing requirements.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience with ASAM Level 2.1 services, group programming, clinical documentation, treatment planning, admissions, continued-stay reviews, discharge planning, staff supervision, compliance, and day-to-day SAIOP operations.

Required Credential

Candidate must hold one of the following credentials and be in good standing with the North Carolina Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board:

Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS)
Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS)
Clinical Supervisor Intern (CSI)

SAIOP Experience Strongly Preferred

Preference will be given to candidates who have previously:

Supervised an SAIOP program.
Led or facilitated SAIOP substance use treatment groups.
Assisted with development or implementation of an SAIOP program.
Managed ASAM Level 2.1 admissions and continued-stay determinations.
Supervised clinical staff providing SUD treatment.
Reviewed SAIOP documentation for clinical quality and compliance.
Developed structured group curricula and treatment schedules.
Worked with LME/MCO or NC-funded behavioral health services.
Participated in audits, monitoring, utilization review, or quality assurance involving substance use services.

Primary Responsibilities

The SAIOP Clinical Supervisor will provide clinical oversight of the program, direct clinical care as appropriate, and ensure appropriate staff supervision is in place.

Responsibilities include:

Provide overall clinical oversight and leadership of the SAIOP program.
Oversee admissions, service provision, continued stay, transition, and discharge processes.
Ensure participants meet appropriate ASAM Level 2.1 criteria.
Ensure assessments and Person-Centered Plans support the participant's identified treatment needs.
Monitor participant progress and ensure treatment interventions remain clinically appropriate.
Ensure the six ASAM dimensions are appropriately considered when determining continued stay, discharge, or transfer to another level of care.
Provide clinical consultation and supervision to SAIOP clinical staff.
Support facilitators with challenging group dynamics, relapse concerns, behavioral issues, clinical deterioration, crisis situations, and other complex cases.
Ensure treatment groups remain clinically structured and recovery-focused.
Review clinical documentation for quality, accuracy, medical necessity, and consistency with participants' treatment goals.
Ensure interventions delivered through SAIOP are identified within the participant's PCP.
Oversee coordination with MAT providers, behavioral health providers, medical providers, care management, and community resources when appropriate.
Monitor compliance with applicable NC DHHS requirements, SAIOP service definitions, documentation standards, confidentiality requirements, and agency policies.
Assist leadership with preparation for audits, monitoring reviews, and quality assurance activities.
Ensure staff complete required SAIOP training within applicable timeframes.
Participate in program development, staff training, quality improvement, and ongoing evaluation of the SAIOP program.

Group Programming

Current SAIOP groups are scheduled:

Monday, Wednesday & Friday
9:00 AM–12:00 PM

The Clinical Supervisor should be familiar with the structure and clinical expectations of intensive outpatient groups and be available to provide consultation and oversight to facilitators regarding group programming and participant needs.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Strong working knowledge of ASAM Criteria and ASAM Level 2.1.
Demonstrated knowledge of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions.
Knowledge of evidence-based SUD treatment practices.
Strong clinical supervision skills.
Ability to assess clinical risk and determine when a participant may require a different level of care.
Knowledge of relapse prevention, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented treatment.
Strong understanding of clinical documentation and medical necessity.
Ability to develop and oversee structured therapeutic group programming.
Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is an experienced substance use professional who understands the actual day-to-day operation of an SAIOP program and can provide both clinical leadership and practical guidance to the treatment team.

We are specifically seeking someone who can help ensure the program is clinically strong, structured, compliant, and effective while supporting facilitators in delivering engaging and meaningful treatment groups.

Direct SAIOP experience is highly desired and should be clearly identified on the applicant's resume.

Pay: $50.00 - $60.00 per hour
