Brief Description of Duties:
SUNY Morrisville is seeking a skilled Plumber & Steamfitter to join the Facilities Management Department. Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the successful candidate will perform journey-level plumbing and steamfitting work involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, replacement, testing, and modification of plumbing, heating, steam, condensate, compressed air, domestic water, sanitary, storm, natural gas, and other piping systems throughout the College.
The successful candidate will support a diverse campus consisting of academic buildings, residence halls, athletic facilities, agricultural facilities, and central utility infrastructure while ensuring systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas, compressed air, steam, condensate, hot water, and related piping systems.
Install, repair, replace, and maintain plumbing fixtures, faucets, valves, flush valves, water heaters, mixing valves, backflow prevention devices, pumps, drains, floor drains, cleanouts, and associated equipment.
Perform steamfitting work involving steam and condensate piping, pressure reducing stations, steam traps, expansion joints, strainers, heat exchangers, valves, pumps, and related campus utility equipment.
Install, modify, and repair copper, cast iron, PVC, CPVC, stainless steel, black iron, galvanized steel, PEX, and threaded, welded, soldered, brazed, grooved, or mechanical piping systems.
Diagnose and repair leaks, blockages, piping failures, equipment malfunctions, and other plumbing and steam distribution problems.
Perform preventive maintenance and inspections of plumbing and steam systems to maximize reliability and extend equipment life.
Assist with the installation, replacement, and maintenance of mechanical equipment associated with plumbing and steam systems, including pumps, heat exchangers, domestic hot water systems, and related equipment.
Read and interpret blueprints, piping schematics, specifications, equipment manuals, and shop drawings.
Coordinate utility shutdowns and system isolations to minimize disruption to campus operations.
Operate threading machines, pipe cutters, welding and brazing equipment, drain cleaning equipment, pipe fusion equipment, power tools, lifts, excavation equipment, and other specialized tools associated with the trade.
Perform excavation, demolition, concrete removal and replacement, and restoration work associated with underground utility repairs.
Assist contractors and other Facilities trades on renovation, rehabilitation, and capital improvement projects.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and document work performed using the College's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
Respond to plumbing, steam, and utility emergencies during normal working hours and after-hours as required.
Maintain a safe work environment and comply with applicable OSHA regulations, New York State Uniform Code, applicable plumbing codes, campus safety procedures, and environmental requirements.
Perform other duties consistent with the Plumber & Steamfitter title as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program
- Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Operational needs:
Possess and maintain a valid New York State driver's license.
Be physically able to perform journey-level plumbing and steamfitting work, including lifting heavy materials, climbing ladders, working at heights, working underground, working in confined spaces, and working indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions.
Be able to read and interpret blueprints, piping diagrams, technical manuals, and written instructions.
Demonstrate the ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and machinery commonly used in the plumbing and steamfitting trades.
Be available to work overtime, alternate shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins as required to support campus operations.
Be able to work independently and collaboratively in a customer-service-oriented environment.
