Position Summary
Sulfur Operations Support, Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Piping Designer to support the design and fabrication of sulfur-processing equipment, pressure-related assemblies, piping systems, skid packages, and custom industrial equipment.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience producing fabrication-ready piping and equipment drawings for oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, power, or industrial projects. This position requires practical knowledge of pressure vessel construction, piping codes, fabrication methods, material specifications, welding requirements, and shop operations.
The Senior Piping Designer will work closely with project management, engineering, quality control, procurement, and fabrication personnel to develop accurate, constructible, and code-compliant drawing packages.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop detailed 2D and 3D designs for process piping, pressure vessels, SulTraps, sulfur-processing equipment, skid packages, supports, structural components, and related assemblies.
- Produce piping plans, elevations, sections, general arrangements, fabrication drawings, spool drawings, piping isometrics, nozzle orientation drawings, and equipment layout drawings.
- Convert P&IDs, customer specifications, engineering calculations, data sheets, and conceptual drawings into complete fabrication-ready drawing packages.
- Prepare pressure vessel shell, head, nozzle, flange, reinforcement pad, support, lifting lug, platform, internals, and attachment details.
- Design piping systems in accordance with applicable project requirements and codes, including ASME B31.3 and other applicable piping standards.
- Support pressure vessel design and documentation in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 1, while coordinating code calculations and certification requirements with the responsible engineer or Authorized Inspector.
- Develop bills of material, material takeoffs, cut lists, piping line lists, valve lists, nozzle schedules, and fabrication details.
- Verify pipe sizes, schedules, pressure classes, flange ratings, gasket types, bolting requirements, material grades, corrosion allowances, and design conditions.
- Review customer drawings, vendor drawings, equipment data sheets, purchase specifications, and project documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Check designs for constructability, accessibility, maintenance clearances, weld access, transportation limitations, lifting requirements, and shop fabrication capabilities.
- Coordinate piping layouts with vessels, structural steel, instrumentation, electrical components, steam tracing, insulation, and process equipment.
- Work directly with welders, fitters, fabricators, inspectors, and shop supervision to resolve drawing questions and fabrication issues.
- Participate in design reviews and identify dimensional conflicts, interferences, missing information, and potential fabrication problems before drawings are released.
- Maintain drawing registers, revision histories, document numbering, redlines, as-built drawings, and final turnover documentation.
- Review and incorporate field measurements, laser-scan information, customer markups, and shop-generated redlines.
- Support project estimating by developing preliminary layouts, material quantities, equipment configurations, and fabrication requirements.
- Assist Quality Control with weld maps, inspection locations, material traceability, NDE requirements, pressure-test boundaries, and code documentation.
- Coordinate with third-party engineers, Authorized Inspection Agencies, customers, subcontractors, and equipment suppliers when required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of piping design or industrial mechanical design experience, with significant experience in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, pressure equipment, power, or industrial fabrication.
- Demonstrated experience producing fabrication drawings for pressure vessels, process piping, skid-mounted equipment, or similar code-related equipment.
- Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, BricsCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, or comparable piping-design software.
- Strong understanding of piping components, valves, fittings, flanges, bolting, gaskets, pipe schedules, material specifications, and pressure classes.
- Working knowledge of ASME B31.3 process piping requirements.
- Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII, Division 1 pressure vessel construction.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, piping specifications, vessel data sheets, engineering calculations, customer specifications, and fabrication drawings.
- Strong understanding of welding and fabrication processes, including joint preparation, weld accessibility, fit-up, tolerances, and inspection requirements.
- Experience preparing piping isometrics, spool drawings, equipment layouts, bills of material, material takeoffs, and nozzle schedules.
- Ability to independently manage multiple drawing packages, priorities, revisions, and project deadlines.
- Strong dimensional-checking, problem-solving, communication, and document-control skills.
- Ability to work on-site and communicate directly with fabrication and quality personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with COMPRESS, PV Elite, CAESAR II, or similar vessel and piping analysis software.
- Experience creating intelligent 3D piping models from P&IDs, existing drawings, field measurements, or legacy piping isometrics.
- Familiarity with ASME Section IX, AWS, API, NBIC, PED, and customer-specific oil and gas requirements.
- Experience designing quick-opening closures, pressure vessel internals, sight glasses, steam-jacketed piping, steam tracing, sulfur-processing equipment, or high-temperature piping systems.
- Experience with stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy materials, corrosion-resistant materials, and pressure-retaining fabrication.
- Knowledge of piping flexibility, thermal expansion, support selection, nozzle-load considerations, and coordination with formal stress analysis.
- Experience supporting ASME-certified fabrication facilities or working with Authorized Inspectors and Authorized Inspection Agencies.
- Familiarity with material traceability, MTRs, PMI requirements, weld maps, NDE documentation, hydrostatic testing, pneumatic testing, and Manufacturer’s Data Reports.
- Experience with point-cloud data, laser scanning, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Revit, Navisworks, or other 3D coordination platforms.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in drafting, mechanical design, engineering technology, or a related technical field.

The successful candidate will be comfortable taking ownership of a project from initial customer information through final fabrication drawings, revisions, shop support, and as-built documentation.
