Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, experienced, and clinically driven Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our multidisciplinary team serving patients in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
The PMHNP will provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, medication management, and ongoing psychiatric care for patients experiencing a range of mental health conditions. This role is ideal for a provider who enjoys working in a structured behavioral health setting and is committed to delivering evidence-based, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care.
The PMHNP will work closely with therapists, counselors, nursing staff, case managers, and other members of the treatment team to develop and monitor individualized treatment plans and support patients as they progress through their level of care.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and ongoing psychiatric follow-up visits for patients participating in PHP and IOP.
- Diagnose and treat a broad range of psychiatric conditions in accordance with current clinical standards and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Provide psychiatric medication management, including initiating, adjusting, monitoring, and discontinuing medications when clinically appropriate.
- Monitor medication effectiveness, side effects, adherence, contraindications, and potential drug interactions.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on each patient's clinical presentation, treatment goals, and level-of-care needs.
- Assess patients for changes in psychiatric symptoms, including depression, anxiety, mood instability, psychosis, trauma-related symptoms, and other behavioral health concerns.
- Evaluate and respond appropriately to psychiatric emergencies, safety concerns, and changes in clinical status, including assessment of suicidal or homicidal ideation when indicated.
- Participate in treatment team meetings and collaborate with therapists, nurses, case managers, and other clinical staff regarding patient progress and treatment recommendations.
- Provide clinical guidance regarding medication-related concerns and changes in a patient's condition.
- Communicate with patients, families, outside providers, primary care providers, pharmacies, and other members of the patient's care team as appropriate.
- Coordinate continuity of psychiatric care and make appropriate recommendations for step-down services, outpatient treatment, higher levels of care, or other community resources.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation in the organization's EMR/EHR system.
- Complete required psychiatric evaluations, progress notes, medication orders, treatment-plan updates, and other clinical documentation.
- Provide telehealth psychiatric services when appropriate and in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulations.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, case reviews, staff education, and other clinical activities that support the quality and effectiveness of the program.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, state and federal regulations, DEA requirements, and applicable standards governing psychiatric practice.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Active Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification and current state licensure.
- Current DEA registration and prescriptive authority, as applicable.
- Experience providing psychiatric evaluation and medication management services.
- Experience working with patients in outpatient behavioral health, PHP, IOP, inpatient psychiatry, community mental health, or a similar setting preferred.
- Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology and evidence-based psychiatric treatment.
- Experience treating a diverse patient population and managing complex psychiatric presentations.
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to recognize changes in psychiatric status and respond appropriately to safety concerns.
- Experience conducting suicide risk assessments and developing appropriate safety and treatment plans.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical documentation systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and patient-centered care.
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage clinical responsibilities in a structured PHP/IOP environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a PHP or IOP setting.
- Experience providing medication management to patients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
- Experience treating adults, adolescents, or other populations served by the program.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary behavioral health treatment team.
- Telepsychiatry experience.
- Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 coding and behavioral health documentation requirements.
