About Green Attic
Green Attic is a growing home-services company serving residential and commercial customers throughout the Chicagoland area.
Our operations include roofing, insulation, energy-efficiency improvements, remodeling, restoration, and multi-trade construction projects.
Ownership has built a strong sales pipeline and revenue engine. We are now hiring an experienced Chief Operating Officer to lead company-wide execution, strengthen management, improve profitability, and build the systems required for continued growth.
This is not primarily a field-supervisor or production-manager position. The COO must understand construction operations deeply, but the main responsibility is to lead the business at an executive level.
The right person will translate company goals into operating plans, develop department leaders, manage financial and operational performance, and ensure the organization executes without depending on ownership for routine decisions.
Position Overview
The Chief Operating Officer will oversee day-to-day business operations across production, project management, scheduling, customer service, warehouse, purchasing, administration, and field execution.
This leader will work directly with ownership to establish priorities, allocate resources, improve organizational structure, and maintain accountability across departments.
The COO must have significant construction or home-services experience and understand how projects move from sales and estimating through scheduling, production, billing, completion, warranty, and customer closeout.
This position requires executive judgment, financial discipline, leadership maturity, and the ability to build a scalable operating system across multiple brands and service divisions.
Executive Responsibilities
- Translate ownership’s vision and growth goals into clear operating plans, priorities, budgets, and measurable targets.
- Lead company-wide operations across roofing, insulation, remodeling, construction, customer service, scheduling, warehouse, and administrative functions.
- Develop and manage department leaders, project managers, production managers, supervisors, and support teams.
- Establish clear organizational structure, decision-making authority, reporting relationships, and accountability.
- Own operational performance, including revenue execution, gross margin, labor efficiency, project completion, customer satisfaction, and cash-flow coordination.
- Review financial and operational reports to identify risks, missed targets, waste, and growth opportunities.
- Build annual, quarterly, and weekly operating plans with clear owners, deadlines, and scorecards.
- Create a consistent management rhythm using leadership meetings, KPI reviews, departmental scorecards, issue tracking, and documented follow-up.
- Ensure sales commitments are properly transferred into estimating, scheduling, production, billing, and project completion.
- Improve communication and coordination between sales, production, project management, warehouse, accounting, and customer service.
- Identify leadership gaps and recruit, train, coach, or replace team members when required.
- Establish performance expectations and hold managers accountable for results, not activity or excuses.
- Lead major operational decisions involving staffing, capacity, scheduling, subcontractors, equipment, materials, vendors, and expansion.
- Reduce operational dependence on ownership by creating reliable leaders, systems, and escalation procedures.
- Evaluate new services, markets, technologies, and operational investments based on profitability and execution capacity.
- Protect the company from operational, safety, compliance, customer-service, and financial risk.
Construction and Production Oversight
The COO will not personally manage every project or crew. However, this person must understand construction well enough to challenge managers, identify weak planning, evaluate risk, and determine whether operations are being run correctly.
Responsibilities include:
- Oversee production performance across roofing, insulation, remodeling, restoration, and multi-trade projects.
- Ensure project scopes are reviewed for completeness, constructability, labor needs, material needs, scheduling risks, and margin protection.
- Confirm that departments have proper systems for job readiness, crew assignments, material coordination, change orders, documentation, quality control, and closeout.
- Review major job delays, callbacks, warranty issues, safety incidents, customer disputes, and margin losses.
- Visit active projects as needed to verify management reports and assess operational performance.
- Ensure field and production leaders maintain quality, safety, cleanliness, documentation, and customer communication standards.
- Identify recurring field problems and require permanent process corrections rather than repeated emergency fixes.
Financial and Performance Management
- Own and improve operational profitability across all service divisions.
- Partner with ownership and accounting to establish budgets, forecasts, labor targets, and margin expectations.
- Review project-level and departmental financial performance.
- Track gross margin, labor cost, material cost, subcontractor cost, callbacks, warranty expenses, write-offs, and outstanding receivables.
- Identify unprofitable services, crews, workflows, vendors, or project types and implement corrective action.
- Improve job costing, purchasing controls, change-order management, billing readiness, and project closeout.
- Ensure managers understand how their decisions affect company profitability and cash flow.
- Build scorecards that provide ownership with a clear view of performance without requiring constant operational involvement.
Systems and Organizational Development
- Build and improve SOPs, workflows, checklists, approval systems, reporting processes, and accountability standards.
- Standardize operations across multiple brands and departments while preserving necessary trade-specific procedures.
- Improve the use of Jobber, HubSpot, ClickUp, Google Workspace, and other business-management platforms.
- Ensure every important decision, issue, and commitment is assigned to an owner with a deadline.
- Develop leadership training, onboarding, performance-management, and succession-planning systems.
- Create reliable communication and escalation procedures for routine issues, urgent problems, and executive decisions.
- Use automation, reporting, and technology to reduce administrative work and improve visibility.
- Build an organization capable of scaling without increasing confusion, duplicated work, or dependence on a few individuals.
Required Qualifications
- At least 8 years of progressive leadership experience in construction, roofing, remodeling, restoration, home services, or a related field.
- At least 5 years in a senior operations, general management, regional leadership, vice president, or executive-level position.
- Strong construction background with a practical understanding of project lifecycle, job costing, scheduling, field production, subcontractor management, safety, quality control, and customer closeout.
- Proven experience leading multiple departments, business units, locations, or service divisions.
- Demonstrated responsibility for operational budgets, profitability, labor performance, and company-level KPIs.
- Experience managing managers, not only individual employees or field crews.
- Proven ability to build organizational structure, improve systems, and reduce dependence on ownership.
- Experience leading through rapid growth, operational pressure, organizational change, or business restructuring.
- Strong financial understanding, including budgeting, forecasting, gross margin, job costing, overhead, and cash-flow impact.
- Ability to analyze data, identify root causes, make difficult decisions, and follow through until results improve.
- Strong executive communication skills with employees, customers, vendors, subcontractors, advisors, and ownership.
- High accountability, sound judgment, emotional control, and the ability to address poor performance directly.
- Comfortable working in person and remaining connected to active construction operations throughout Chicagoland.
- Proficient with CRM, scheduling, project-management, reporting, and task-management technology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading a construction or home-services company with multiple service divisions.
- Roofing, insulation, building-envelope, remodeling, restoration, or energy-efficiency experience.
- Experience managing both W-2 employees and subcontractors.
- Experience with businesses generating significant annual revenue and managing rapid growth.
- Experience implementing EOS, L10 meetings, scorecards, rocks, or a comparable operating system.
- Experience with Jobber, HubSpot, ClickUp, JobTread, Roofr, or similar platforms.
- Experience with acquisitions, new division launches, geographic expansion, or operational integration.
- OSHA, construction-management, business, finance, or trade-related credentials.
- Bilingual English and Spanish.
Performance Expectations
Success in this position will be measured by:
- Improved company-wide gross margin and operational profitability.
- Consistent achievement of revenue and production targets.
- Stronger department leadership and reduced ownership involvement in routine operations.
- More accurate scheduling, forecasting, job costing, and resource planning.
- Fewer project delays, callbacks, customer escalations, warranty issues, and incomplete jobs.
- Improved labor efficiency, material control, and subcontractor performance.
- Faster resolution of operational problems and stronger follow-through.
- Clear company and department scorecards with reliable reporting.
- Documented SOPs and management systems that are consistently followed.
- Improved coordination between sales, operations, accounting, and customer service.
- A scalable leadership structure capable of supporting continued growth.
Who This Role Is For
This position is for an experienced construction executive who can see the entire business, not only the project directly in front of them.
You may be a strong fit if you:
- Have led managers, departments, and company-wide operations.
- Understand construction deeply enough to identify weak planning, unrealistic schedules, poor scopes, and margin risks.
- Can balance growth, customer satisfaction, quality, safety, profitability, and employee performance.
- Turn business goals into practical operating plans with measurable accountability.
- Build leaders instead of becoming the person everyone must call for every answer.
- Use data and financial results to make decisions.
- Address poor performance directly and professionally.
- Can move between executive strategy and operational details without becoming trapped in either.
- Have successfully introduced structure into a fast-growing or disorganized organization.
- Want a long-term executive role with genuine authority, accountability, and growth potential.
