The Field Service Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and servicing of construction equipment, vehicles, and small tools used by field crews. The Mechanic provides mobile field support to keep equipment operating safely and efficiently, minimize downtime, and ensure repairs and preventive maintenance are completed in accordance with company standards and manufacturer requirements.
The Field Service Mechanic works closely with Operations, Superintendents, Foremen, Equipment Management, and equipment operators to respond to breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and maintain the company's fleet and construction equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy construction equipment and vehicles.
- Service excavators, bulldozers, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, graders, compactors, rollers, off-road trucks, pickups, trailers, pumps, generators, and other equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer recommendations and company schedules.
- Perform routine oil, filter, fluid, lubrication, and grease services.
- Inspect and maintain hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, cooling, emissions, fuel, brake, steering, and drivetrain systems.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic leaks, electrical problems, starting and charging systems, brakes, suspension components, and other equipment issues.
- Replace belts, hoses, filters, batteries, lights, fittings, wear components, and other parts as required.
- Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and equipment modifications when qualified, trained, and authorized.
- Repair and maintain small engines, pumps, generators, compactors, saws, and other small equipment.
- Troubleshoot equipment problems and determine whether repairs can be completed in the field or require shop support.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns at jobsites and provide emergency repair support.
- Complete repairs efficiently while maintaining safe work practices and quality standards.
- Verify equipment is operating properly after repairs before returning it to service.
Field Service
- Travel to active construction sites to inspect and repair equipment.
- Respond to field service calls based on operational priorities.
- Coordinate with Foremen and Superintendents to determine equipment problems and repair needs.
- Communicate estimated repair requirements, parts needs, and equipment downtime to management.
- Prioritize repairs based on safety, project schedule, equipment availability, and operational needs.
- Assist field crews with troubleshooting equipment problems when appropriate.
- Maintain service vehicles, mobile tools, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, and parts inventory.
Preventive Maintenance
- Maintain accurate preventive maintenance schedules and records.
- Conduct routine inspections of company equipment and vehicles.
- Identify potential mechanical problems before they result in major breakdowns.
- Maintain equipment lubrication schedules.
- Monitor equipment hours and service intervals.
- Recommend replacement of worn or unsafe components.
- Communicate recurring equipment issues to Equipment Management and Operations.
- Assist with developing maintenance procedures that improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
Parts and Inventory
- Maintain an organized inventory of commonly used repair parts, filters, fluids, fittings, hoses, belts, electrical components, and other supplies.
- Identify parts required for repairs and communicate purchasing needs.
- Maintain accurate records of parts used and equipment serviced.
- Properly store tools, equipment, lubricants, fluids, and hazardous materials.
- Minimize unnecessary parts usage and control repair costs.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Use appropriate lockout/tagout procedures when performing repairs.
- Properly support and secure equipment before working underneath or around machinery.
- Use appropriate PPE for mechanical, welding, electrical, hydraulic, and field repair activities.
- Follow proper procedures for handling fuels, oils, coolants, batteries, and other hazardous materials.
- Maintain safe work areas and properly dispose of waste fluids, filters, and contaminated materials.
- Report unsafe equipment conditions immediately.
- Remove unsafe equipment from service when necessary.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
Documentation and Communication
- Maintain accurate service records for equipment and vehicles.
- Document repairs, parts used, labor hours, equipment hours, and maintenance performed.
- Report major repairs, recurring failures, and equipment replacement needs.
- Communicate equipment status with Equipment Management, Operations, Superintendents, and Foremen.
- Maintain required inspection and maintenance documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction equipment, trucks, or similar machinery.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, emissions, electrical systems, and heavy equipment components.
- Ability to diagnose problems and perform repairs independently in the field.
- Ability to read equipment manuals, service information, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel between multiple construction jobsites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere, Volvo, Hitachi, Case, or similar construction equipment.
- Experience with diesel engines and heavy-duty trucks.
- Experience with hydraulic and electrical diagnostics.
- Experience with welding and fabrication.
- Experience using electronic diagnostic tools and manufacturer-specific service software.
- CDL preferred.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Manufacturer-specific equipment training or certifications.
- Formal diesel technology, heavy equipment mechanics, or automotive training preferred.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
The employee must be able to:
- Work in, around, underneath, and on top of heavy equipment and vehicles.
- Climb ladders, equipment access points, and truck beds.
- Frequently bend, kneel, squat, crawl, reach, twist, and work in confined or awkward positions.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds regularly and heavier components with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
- Use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, and other mechanical tools.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wind, and direct sunlight.
- Work around moving equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems (12 and 24 volt), diesel engines, fuels, oils, batteries, and other mechanical hazards.
- Wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear/boots, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, welding protection, and other PPE as required.
- Work extended hours or respond to emergency breakdowns when operational requirements demand.
Work Environment
This position is primarily performed in active construction environments, including jobsites, equipment yards, maintenance areas, and field locations. The Field Crew Mechanic may work around heavy equipment, excavation, construction traffic, dust, mud, noise, vibration, diesel exhaust, hydraulic systems, fuels, oils, and changing weather conditions.
The position requires frequent travel between jobsites and may require emergency response to equipment breakdowns outside normal working hours. Strict compliance with company safety policies, OSHA requirements, manufacturer procedures, and environmental regulations is mandatory.
