Full Job Description

The Lufkin Daily News, in Lufkin, Texas, is an award-winning, community-focused news organization that has served its community since 1907. The Lufkin Daily News publishes news online daily and in a printed edition Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. As a trusted commercial printer, more than 30 community newspapers are printed weekly from The Lufkin Daily News facility in downtown Lufkin.

Position Description

Responsible for financial reporting and advertising scheduling, billing and collection procedures. Responsible for managing the daily reporting, planning, collection and coordination of billable sales and cash received.

Overview

Accounting managers at The Lufkin Daily News understand the business from the accounting perspective. They are inquisitive, determined, focused, and required to move from topic to topic while producing accurate and in-depth financial analysis on tight deadlines. They understand cash flow, checks and balances and accounting principles. Their integrity is unimpeachable and they are intent on providing accurate and timely financial reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains accounting controls and separation of duties in accordance with controls set up by the local business office manager, corporate office and auditors. Understanding the chart of accounts; updating accounting policies and procedures.

Performs daily tasks for the business such as cash register policies and procedures, account collections, mail and bank runs.

Assists the business office manager in balancing the general ledger accounts monthly and completing close out in timely manner to corporate office.

Responsible for consumables inventory tracking and overseeing its monthly financial impact.

Provides reports and financial analysis to advertising sales reps, advertising director, publisher and other department heads as requested.

Helps calculate biweekly payroll and supply credits and charges as needed.

Coordinates collections, deposits and money exchanges between other parties.

Maintains accounting and organization mission by completing related results as needed. Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.

Addresses any accounting questions with the business office manager or home office, reports directly to the business office manager and the publisher. Performs other duties as directed by management.

Requirements

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or commensurate work experience

Qualifications

Ability to analyze financial reports and perform statistical analysis.
Strong multi-tasking skills.
Must have strong leadership and diplomatic skills and ability to handle stress well.
Newspaper experience ideal.
Manufacturing experience helpful.
Must have proven record in data entry, multiple-screen order entry, monthly reconciliations and journaling.

Physical Requirement

Close eye work, continuous sitting, and light to moderate lifting 5-15 pounds.

The worker is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes; is sometimes subject to outside environmental conditions.
