Heavy Civil Project Engineer / Associate Project Manager
Black Ark Builders, LLC | Boise, Idaho
Full-Time | Compensation Based on Experience, Capability & Impact
Build More Than Projects. Build Your Career.
Black Ark Builders is looking for a Heavy Civil Project Engineer / Associate Project Manager who wants an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
We are building a high-performing heavy civil construction company, and we are looking for talented people who want to help us grow it.
This is not a narrowly defined administrative position. It is an opportunity to work across project management, field operations, estimating, scheduling, procurement, cost control, subcontractor management, and client relations while developing the skills necessary to become an exceptional construction manager.
If you help Black Ark succeed, we will work hard to help you succeed.
We want top performers to grow their responsibilities, careers, capabilities, and earning potential alongside the company.
The Opportunity
Our Project Engineers and Associate Project Managers directly support the successful execution of heavy civil, excavation, underground utility, earthwork, shoring, concrete, structural, and infrastructure projects.
You will work closely with our project managers, superintendents, foremen, field crews, clients, engineers, vendors, and trade partners to keep projects moving forward.
The role will be nimble and tailored to the strengths of the right candidate. We want to put talented people in positions where they can succeed, contribute immediately, and continue expanding their capabilities.
As you demonstrate performance, judgment, and ownership, expect your responsibility to grow.
What You'll Do
You will help bridge the gap between the field, project management, estimating, and office, ensuring our construction teams have the information, resources, planning, and support necessary to execute successfully.
Responsibilities will include:
- Prepare and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, project correspondence, and other project documentation.
- Develop subcontractor, vendor, procurement, and construction scope packages.
- Coordinate with Superintendents and Foremen to anticipate upcoming work and remove constraints before they affect production.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, general contractors, engineers, design professionals, subcontractors, vendors, and trade partners.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, look-ahead plans, and work plans.
- Help ensure our work remains aligned with contractual milestones and the owner's or general contractor's overall project schedule.
- Coordinate materials, equipment, subcontractors, vendors, and other resources necessary for field execution.
- Support project cost control, forecasting, billing, procurement, and change management.
- Identify constructability issues, scope gaps, design conflicts, and project risks—and help develop solutions.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and estimating for heavy civil construction.
- Solicit, review, compare, and qualify subcontractor and vendor proposals.
- Develop pricing, scopes, and proposals for general contractors, engineers, owners, and clients.
- Assist with project startup, execution, closeout, and lessons learned.
- Continuously look for ways to improve safety, quality, productivity, planning, communication, and profitability.
The paperwork matters—but the objective is successful field execution.
Who We're Looking For
Ideal candidates have successfully contributed to heavy civil construction involving several of the following:
- Excavation and mass earthwork
- Underground pipe installation
- Water, sewer, storm drain, and utility infrastructure
- Shoring and trench support systems
- Site development
- Concrete construction
- General structural construction
- Municipal, commercial, industrial, or public infrastructure
A Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related degree is valuable, but demonstrated capability, construction knowledge, judgment, and performance matter more to us than checking boxes on a résumé.
What Separates Top Performers
Technical ability is only part of what we are looking for.
We want people who:
- Maintain a positive disposition when conditions become difficult.
- Thrive under pressure without creating unnecessary pressure for the people around them.
- Take ownership of commitments, deliverables, and outcomes.
- Anticipate what needs to happen next instead of waiting to be directed.
- Communicate early, clearly, professionally, and proactively.
- Are creative, solution-focused problem solvers.
- Can move comfortably between the field, office, client, engineer, and executive environments.
- Protect the company's interests while maintaining strong professional relationships.
- Tell the truth—even when the truth is inconvenient.
- Hold themselves to high standards of honesty, integrity, accountability, and personal conduct.
- Care about their coworkers, their community, and the impact their work has on the people around them.
- Want responsibility and are prepared to earn increasingly greater responsibility through performance.
We are looking for people others can trust when things get difficult.
Work Smarter. Perform at a High Level.
Black Ark believes exceptional people should have exceptional tools.
We actively seek out industry-leading technology, high-quality equipment, better systems, and more efficient ways of working whenever they can improve safety, communication, productivity, decision-making, or the quality of our work.
We want our managers spending their energy planning, communicating, solving problems, and leading—not fighting inefficient systems that should have been improved years ago.
We expect our people to continuously ask:
How can we do this safer, better, faster, and more intelligently?
Grow With Us
This role has a genuine opportunity to influence the future of Black Ark Builders.
As the company grows, we expect opportunities for our strongest performers to grow with it.

- Expanding into estimating or preconstruction.
- Developing expertise in project controls, scheduling, or operations.
- Building client and industry relationships.
- Helping develop company systems and processes.

Success at Work—and Outside of It
We believe professional success should create opportunity in the rest of your life.

Top performers should have the opportunity to increase their responsibility and earning potential, provide well for their families, build meaningful careers, and still have successful lives outside of work.
