Full Job Description

ABOUT US:
The STARability Foundation Supports people with disabilities by providing life-transforming opportunities that emphasize Teamwork and connection to the community to build Awareness and Respect for individual abilities. STARability serves individuals with intellectual and developmental challenges in Southwest Florida, where we provide lifetime support and opportunities. STARability opens up a calendar of engaging activities with innovative and creative programs focusing on continuing education, teamwork, and community involvement.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Workforce Development Specialist at STARability Foundation delivers direct instruction and individualized learning support across career preparation, industry training, and workforce readiness programs serving adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. This role designs and adapts lesson plans, implements differentiated instructional methods, and leads both individual and group learning experiences that build practical work skills and promote each participant’s path toward meaningful employment and community inclusion. The Workforce Development Specialist works collaboratively with the career services team and program staff to develop curriculum, support internship readiness, conduct functional assessments, and maintain accurate documentation of participant progress.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Uphold STARability’s Core Values of Support, Teamwork, Awareness, and Respect.
Deliver direct instruction in individual and group settings of up to 12 participants, in-person or virtually, across employment readiness and career development classes offered through each STARability program, such as Professional Development, STAR Entrepreneurship, Travel Training, Financial Literacy, Self-Advocacy, and Post-secondary Education Counseling.
Design and adapt lesson plans, differentiate instructional methods, and apply evidence-based teaching strategies to support diverse learning styles and support needs.
Develop and customize individualized visual supports such as task lists and adapted materials for pre-employment training, active employment (e.g., employee handbooks), and group instruction contexts.
Collaborate with program leadership to determine and refine curriculum for general work readiness and specialized programs, including industry-specific and transition-focused tracks.
Lead participant preparedness for internal and external internship programs, including orientation, skill-building, and coordination of internship placement readiness.
Conduct assessments including pre- and post-program evaluations, functional skill assessments, and interest and personality inventories to inform individualized training engagement plans.
Develop individualized training engagement plans in conjunction with participant career development plans, documenting goals, strategies, and progress milestones. Coordinate and lead community-based learning activities such as industry tours, informational interviews, and field components of program experiences.
Provide job coaching support as needed to reinforce work skills and workplace expectations in community employment settings.
Lead group activities in the community, ensuring participant safety, engagement, and adherence to learning objectives throughout.
Pursue and maintain “train the trainer” certifications such as food safety or customer service, and deliver certified training content to participants as applicable.
Support participants with transportation-related skill-building, including Travel Training program instruction, with an emphasis on safe, independent community navigation.
Assist with the preparation and delivery of disability-inclusion training for employer partners and community stakeholders.
Attend to participant support needs during all activities, including recognizing medical needs and applying crisis management principles when required.
Communicate relevant information to appropriate staff in a timely manner, including schedule changes and behavioral incidents.
Manage the RSVP system for classes and maintain accurate attendance records. Document participant progress, support strategies, and performance through case notes in compliance with organizational standards.
Complete incident reports accurately and in accordance with STARability policies and required timelines.
Additional duties as assigned, including attendance to and participation in STARability social events and fundraising gala.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Stand or sit for long periods periodically.
May occasionally lift at least 50 pounds unassisted and perform emergency physical interaction techniques, including lifting, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, blocking, and grabbing with or without assistance.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Behavioral Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Therapeutic Recreation, Rehabilitation Counseling, Human Services, or a specialization in a related field; or four years of experience providing education, social, or direct care services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Familiarity with pre-employment transition services, supported employment, or community-based vocational programming preferred.
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) employment specialist certification is required within 90 days of hire.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and similar productivity tools; Canva or comparable design platforms for materials development; interactive instructional tools (e.g., Mentimeter, Kahoot, Padlet); scheduling systems (e.g., Calendly); virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom); and Salesforce or a comparable CRM system.
Demonstrates flexibility, patience, and the ability to manage diverse situations, including assisting participants by verbally prompting them with personal care tasks (e.g., changing clothing, using the 2 restroom), addressing problem behavior such as inappropriate verbalizations, and handling instances of aggression.
Ability to perform cleaning tasks (moving heavy furniture and appliances on rollers, pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, and overhead reaching).
Ability to communicate with a wide variety of individuals within the community. Observe, ask questions, listen actively, and give and accept feedback effectively. Excellent time management, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize workload.
Valid state driver's license with motor vehicle proficiency and ability to comply with legal driving requirements.
Competency in virtual platforms like Zoom and willingness to learn new technology for educational instruction.
Employment offer contingent on satisfactory and successful completion of background, abuse registry, and reference checks.
