Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Retina PracticePosition Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a key member of the retina care team, providing advanced clinical support under the direction of the physician(s). The NP delivers high-quality, patient-centered care by performing comprehensive assessments, coordinating diagnostic testing, assisting with treatment planning, and managing ongoing patient education and follow-up. The NP collaborates closely with the physician, technicians, scribes, and research staff to optimize clinical efficiency and ensure exceptional outcomes for patients with retinal conditions.

ResponsibilitiesClinical Care

Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including detailed medical histories, systemic and ocular health review, and physical examinations.
Perform and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., OCT, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, visual acuity).
Diagnose and manage common retinal and systemic conditions under physician guidance.
Administer intravitreal injections and other minor ophthalmic procedures as credentialed.
Provide pre- and post-operative patient care, including surgical clearance and post-op monitoring.
Educate patients and families regarding retinal disease processes, treatment plans, medications, and long-term management.

Care Coordination

Collaborate with ophthalmologists to develop individualized care plans.
Facilitate patient flow in clinic to maintain efficiency and reduce wait times.
Communicate with referring providers, primary care physicians, and co-managing specialists as needed.
Support integration of clinical trials and research protocols where appropriate.

Compliance & Documentation

Document all patient encounters accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and all regulatory standards.
Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based practices, retina therapies, and emerging technologies.

Qualifications

Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing (MSN/DNP) with Nurse Practitioner certification.
Current, unrestricted Florida NP license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
National Board Certification (AANP or ANCC).
BLS/ACLS certification required.
Minimum 1–2 years of NP experience preferred (ophthalmology or retina experience strongly desired, but training available for the right candidate).

Skills & Competencies

Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
Proficiency with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and intravitreal injection techniques (training provided if needed).
Excellent communication and patient-education abilities.
Detail-oriented with strong documentation and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a high-volume, fast-paced retina practice.

Work Environment

High-volume retina/ophthalmology clinic.
Direct patient interaction with elderly and visually impaired populations.
Collaboration with physicians, scribes, technicians, research staff, and administrative team.
